The A6 Allroad Returns

Earlier this year, Audi announced it was bringing its RS6 performance wagon to U.S. shores. Although tough to top a reveal of that caliber, Audi followed up the RS6 announcement by announcing the relaunch of its semi-offroad A6 model in the U.S. First introduced in 1999, Audi's beefed up wagon has always come ready to hit the dirt. Whether its buyers ever intended to go off-road or not, its equipment and looks have always excited wagon lovers who were heartbroken to see it leave the U.S. market. See how the latest iteration of the A6 Allroad stacks up against the last generation, 2004 Audi A6 Allroad Quattro, that trekked across U.S. soil.

Ruggedized

The A6 Allroad is notorious for off-road enhancements including rugged body-cladding, skidplates, increased ride height, and standard all-wheel drive. The 2004 Audi A6 Allroad Quattro featured matte-finish fascias and fender flares, stainless steel skid plates, and an adjustable air suspension system that could provide up to 8.2 inches of ground clearance. For 2020, Audi has refined the Allroad package to include gray matte wheel arches and rocker panels, a wide Allroad-specific grille with chrome vertical slats and 20-inch wheels. In addition, an aluminum-looking finish can be found on the standard roof rails, front blade and underbody protection, and the Allroad-specific diffuser in the rear. The new A6 Allroad still uses an adaptable air suspension system that works in conjunction with the vehicles driver-assist and off-road tech. At its maximum height, the Allroad can attain a total ground clearance of 7.3 inches.

Power Gains

The 2004 A6 Allroad Quattro came available with two motors: a 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 and a 4.2-liter V8. The notoriously unreliable 2.7-liter turbo V6 was good for 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 4.2-liter V8 threw down 296 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. The 2020 Audi A6 Allroad gets the automaker's most advanced turbocharged 3.0-liter TFSI V6 featuring mild-hybrid technology. The 3.0-liter V6 produces 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. To break it down for you, the 2020 3.0-liter V6 increased horsepower by roughly 36% over the 2004 2.7-liter V6, and 13% over the 2004 4.2-liter V8.

Interior

Audi has been dinged for issues with interior quality in the past, but the brand has done a hell of a job ensuring its cars are worthy of the luxury designation as of late. Most interior gripes with the elder A6 Allroad were with the standard "leather", "wood" trim and cheap plastic everywhere. The 2020 A6 Allroad features a modern and sporty aesthetic featuring leather seats with suede-like inserts and metallic accent trimmings throughout.

Options

Standard features in the 2004 A6 Allroad Quattro included special high-support bucket seats, and front/front-side airbags teamed with inflatable side curtains, keyless remote locking, AM/FM/CD/cassette stereo, dual-zone auto climate control, a full range of power amenities, optional GPS and (wait for it...), an in-car phone. Comparing the 2020 Audi A6 Allroad to the 2004 model, it's amazing to see how far Audi tech has come. The new A6 sports the brand's standard Multi-Media Interface touch response system with dual screen displays that is capable of displaying terrain information. The A6 Allroad has six available drive modes for a variety of terrain conditions that work with the vehicle's standard hill descent control, tilt angle assist and dynamic all-wheel steering. Other premium features include a standard dual pane panoramic sunroof, Ambient LED interior lighting package and 3D Premium Sound System.
