1. V2I Service

Audi's first ever V2I service, or Vehicle to Infrastructure integration, is essentially technology that enables communication between the on-board Audi connect® system and surrounding traffic lights. It's the first step Audi is taking to aid in shortening commutes and improving overall efficiency for their vehicles.

2. Selected Models

Audi's V2I technology will be seen in select 2017 Q7, A4 (shown), and A4 all-road models that were built after June 1, 2016 and are equipped with Audi connect®. These models will be able to receive and exchange information thanks to the LTE data connection found on-board paired with the Traffic Technology Services servers.

3. Safety vs. Comfort

According to Pom Malhotra, GM of Audi’s connected cars division, this technology acts more in the interest of comfort and convenience than of safety. The responsibility of staying alert will still fall on the shoulders of the driver. This system is not meant to be confused with autonomous driving technology.

4. Specific Features

The connected car technology that Audi will equip its Q7 and A4 models with was designed to make drivers less anxious. When waiting for a red light to turn green, the instrument cluster (and the head-up display, if equipped) will show a countdown so the driver knows when he/she can expect to move. This countdown will disappear a few seconds before the light actually turns green so that the driver looks up and is more aware of the light itself. Also, if the car receives information while approaching a signal and determines it won't make the light before it turns red, the countdown will appear again to let the driver know to begin braking.

5. Roll Out Plan

We don't know exactly where Audi plans to roll out its connected car technology, but we do know that they'll begin with five to seven cities in the U.S. this fall, as in over the next couple of months. The technology will essentially be switched on for the select models, one city at a time.
