5 Most Expensive Audis to Insure

One thing we rarely think about when buying a new car is just how much the insurance will cost, and buying one of these five Audi models will put the biggest dent in your wallet.

A8L 3.0T Quattro - $2,938
S7 4.0T Quattro Prestige - $2,993
RS7 Quattro Prestige - $3,176
S8 4.0T Quattro Plus - $3,208
R8 5.2L V10 Quattro - $3,267

1. Audi A8L 3.0T Quattro - $2,938 a year

Each year, Insure.com puts together a handy list ranking the most expensive and least expensive vehicles to insure, on average. While insurance costs vary greatly from state to state and among individual drivers, this tool is invaluable in determining which models we might want to seek out or avoid altogether. The list also provides us with a fascinating look at how insurance rates are determined in the first place; it isn't always about absolute cost or speed, repair costs and the frequency of claims also play a major role.

Coming in as the fifth most expensive Audi to insure for 2017 is the luxurious A8L 3.0T Quattro with an average annual cost of $2,938. It's rather surprising to see the less expensive 3.0 liter V6 model carrying a higher insurance cost than the 4.0 V8 model ($2,631), but that's exactly why we do this sort of experiment. Despite sporting a lower price tag, the forced induction V6 carries a higher average repair cost, hence the additional premium.

2. Audi S7 4.0T Quattro Prestige - $2,993 a year

While we were admittedly a little bit surprised by the A8L, we're not at all shocked to see the premium S7 land on our list. With prodigious horsepower and an $83,000 base price, it checks all the boxes insurance companies look for when jacking up premiums. But we suppose that's the price you pay if you want the ultimate luxury/performance 4-door coupe, and opting for the Premium Plus package over the Prestige will only save you roughly $100 a year, anyway.

3. Audi RS7 Quattro Prestige - $3,176 a year

Just as it slots above the S7 in Audi's lineup, the RS7 also costs a bit more to ensure than its less powerful brethren. The extra couple hundred bucks a year doesn't really compensate for the difference in base price (in the event of a total write off), which is tens of thousands of dollars. With the RS7 you do get an extra 150+ hp and a low 3-second 0-60 mph time with the forced induction V8, so paying a little more every month for insurance is a bargain.

4. Audi S8 4.0T Quattro Plus - $3,208 a year

The ultimate version of the A8 luxury sedan is the S8, which utilizes the same 605 hp, 4.0 liter V8 firebreather used in the RS7. It's also only a tenth of a second slower to 60 then the smaller sleeker RS7, which is absolutely blazing fast for a full-size, premium luxury sedan. As you would imagine, all of that goodness will cost you a pretty penny in insurance costs.

5. AUdi R8 5.2L V10 Quattro - $3,267 a year

The number one most expensive Audi to insure in 2017 should surprise no one, after all, the R8 is a proper supercar and it represents the absolute pinnacle of performance in Audi's lineup. What is surprising, however, is that you'll actually pay a bit more to insure the 540 hp base R8 than the Plus, which packs 610 horsepower - but those savings only amount to a paltry $35 a year. Of course, if you can afford to drive an R8 the insurance bill will be no problem.
