1. Efficient Guardrails and Road Markers

Audi has been researching materials that could be used in the manufacturing of guardrails and road markers, which would better reflect radar waves. Specifically, the goal is to help make these objects easier for sensors aboard autonomous vehicles to see in inclement weather, and from greater distances in good weather.

2. New Road Markers

Audi is also looking into creating additional road markers that will be easier for cameras aboard autonomous vehicles to see. This will, in turn, help the car better position itself on the road.

3. Better Communication between Cars

Audi is exploring vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure technology, which can be used to alert cars of local speed limits, real time traffic conditions, ice conditions, and more.

4. Better Communication between Local Infrastructure

Audi has created technology that allows its cars to communicate with local infrastructure, such as traffic lights. The idea in creating this technology is for the lights to inform the driver when it will be changing to green, to improve things like vehicle navigation, ease traffic congestion, and better time engine start/stop functionality.

5. Improved Mapping

Audi is working on very detailed mapping of Germany's Digital Motorway Test Bed, which is where the company is testing out its autonomous vehicles. This select part of Bavarian geography is made up of a few sections of highway on which the government and industry can test autonomous and connected tech. Audi’s goal is to create mapping that is accurate down to the centimeter; this, in turn, would improve such matters as navigation and traffic congestion.
