Record Breaker

Audi is a world renowned automobile maker, and as a world renowned automobile maker, it should be no surprise that Audi has already broken several world records. Whether the records have to do with sales figures per year, motorsports, or just plain performance, Audi has taken the steps to ensure they create a lasting legacy in this world. What follows are some of the most amazing achievements Audi has managed during the last century.

Most Miles Traveled on a Tank of Fuel

Audi is know for technical innovations, all-wheel drive sportiness, and luxury, but their TDI models are also some of the most fuel efficient on the market. The car used to set this record was a stock 2015 Audi A6 2.0 TDI Ultra. Rebecca Jackson and Andrew Frankel constantly rotated driving responsibilities, keeping the car on the road for a whopping 28 hours. If that wasn’t cool enough, even with some instances of traffic, they managed to keep their average cruising speed at 50 mph. The team covered 1,158.9 miles on one tank, with an average fuel consumption of 63 mpg. For reference, that’s about the distance from New York City to Orlando, Florida.

Yep, you read that right, and yep, that’s actually a thing people keep track of. Back in 2015 Audi decided to implement a new marketing strategy which essentially had them place a life-size poster for their 2016 A3 into the Japanese national paper Asahi Shinbun. The poster is massive, measuring 2.77 square meters, or nearly 30 square feet. It seems this marketing ploy may not have been a great success, since we’ve yet to see another campaign like it.

Audi R8 E-tron Nürburgring Lap

Back in 2012, Audi built an all-electric R8 capable of speeds of up to 155 mph, via two 308 hp/605 lb-ft electric motors. It managed to complete one 12.9 mile lap of the Nurdergring course in 8:09.099 minutes, making itself the fastest fully electric car to lap the track, and possibly the first. That E-tron had an impressive amount of torque that managed to power it from 0-62 mph in 4.6 seconds. Unfortunately that 2012 E-tron never made it to the public, and only 100 of the 2016 R8 E-tron ever made it through production before Audi finally canned the project.

As of 2016 NIO, a Chinese automotive company, had manage to beat the record with its new EP9 electric super car.

Most World Car Awards

The Audi R8 is a technological masterpiece, and a bonafide supercar, which is why it has won the World Car Awards top ranking for performance car in 2008, 2010, and 2016. These awards are voted on by the top motoring press every year in various categories. In 2005, the Audi A6 took the top prize "World Car of the Year". In 2007 they nearly got two awards, with the RS4 taking "World Performance Car", and the Audi TT narrowly missing the top prize. The humble little A3 managed to beat BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, Cadillac, and other to take the "World Car of the Year" title. In 2016 when the R8 was at the top of the Performance ranking,, the latest Audi A4 finished 3rd in the rankings, and in the luxury category the Q7 was narrowly edged out by the Volvo XC90 and BMW 7-series.

Audi Ski Jump Commercials

Back in 1986, Audi filmed a dramatic commercial showcasing quattro all-wheel drive, and at the same time decided to attempt and beat a world record with the Audi 100. The Ski Jump commercial involved the Audi 100 climbing a 37.5 degrees (80 percent gradient) inclined ski jump, then stopping at the peak. The result was one crazy commercial, that remained etched in peoples minds for years, and set a record for a car climbing that sort of slope. In 2005 Audi attempted the same commercial, this time showcasing their new A6, and managed to set a new record by doing it in just 9 seconds at a speed of 60 kmh.
