8 Soon to be Classic Audi Road Cars

For most people a car older than 25 year can be considered a classic, if it is worthy. These Audi models are all approaching 20 years old, and the time is right to start shopping for your timeless vintage classic Audi now.

1. 1980-91 Ur-Quattro Coupe

Turbo power and the introduction of the quattro all-wheel drive system, wrapped into a "hot hatch" sized package made this the car to have for the grown up bow racer of the 1980s. These cars are the acorn from which the current Audi brand has grown over the past 37 years. In the US and Canada, the original Quattro coupes only were sold from 1983 through 1986, and less than 1,000 made it across the Atlantic, but they are old enough that you can probably get one of the 12,000 or so sold in Europe through customs.

2. 1988-93 V8

Audi was already considered a German luxury car maker before the V8 was introduced in 1988, but this was the car that really put them on the same level as Mercedes or BMW. The large and lovely V8 was in the same market class as the BMW 7-series, or the Mercedes-Benz S-class, which are the cars for people who can choose whether they are going to drive, or be driven on any given day. Power was from a smooth running 32 valve DOHC V8 motor, with 3.6 or later 4.2 liters, and up to 276hp, and even today these cars have plenty of power for freeway cruising.

3. 2002-2004 C5 RS6 Avant

This one is barely 15 years old, but is just so bonkers that it makes the list anyway. This is an honest to goodness family station wagon, with 444hp, sub 5 second 0-60 time, and top speed of more than 160mph (if the limiter doesn't kick in at 155 like it should). Wagons like this are not that uncommon from high end European manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, but they rarely if ever come to America. This one, unfortunately, did not.

4. 2000-2001 B5 RS4

There's a time to show your hand and a time to play incognito. Audi created the B5 RS4 to be an unassuming little giant that packed a generous 375 hp in a twin turbo V6. This nice ride can hit 0-60 in under 5 seconds, but fade back into traffic the minute your foot isn't on the floor.

5. 1999-2005 Allroad Quattro

When the North American market was first going crazy for SUVs, Audi decided to whip one up based on the A6 wagon. They fitted some plastic cladding, wheel flares, air-suspension, and all-terrain wheels and tires, and called it the allroad quattro. Nearly all of these pumped up wagons were powered by a twin turbo 2.7 liter V6, and they could be had with an automatic, or a manual with special low range for off-road use.

6. 1994-95 RS2 Avant

If Audi can lay claim for anything (besides quattro), it could be creating unassuming child-hauling wagons that can knock the doors off the best of them. The next time you are at a red light next to a bonehead wanting to race your wagon, feel confident knowing that your little red wagon will clean his clock when you hit 60 in 4.8 seconds. Just try to stifle that grin known that you are in command of 315 bhp at 302 lb-ft of torque, and laugh knowing that this little wagon was screwed together by Porsche on the same factory floor where the 959 was built.

7. 1992-94 A4 S4

Commonly called the Ur-S4 these days, this turbo 5 cylinder sedan was another sleeper that had plenty of power when you wanted it. Put your foot down and you had 276hp once the turbo spooled up, and 258lb-ft of torque. These cars still look great too, and chances are will continue to do so for another 50 years. The slightly larger Ur-S6 which was sold from 1995-97 was only slightly bigger, and nearly the same car.

8. 1999-2006 Ur-TT

The TT was the first sports car from Audi, and even though it was based on humble VW Golf underpinnings, it won many people over. There is no denying the classic shape and minimalist style, and the small size allowed it to be a decent performer even without a ton of power. Available with a turbo four cylinder or the 32. liter VR6, and front of quattro all-wheel drive, it is up to you whether you want a cute roadster or a serious canyon carver.
