Possibly the best all-round A8

Audi has added yet another hybrid vehicle to its luxury portfolio, with the A8 L 60 TFSI e. This plug-in version of the A8 platform promises to deliver luxury motoring with a lower carbon footprint. Audi's concept is to provide all the cruising ability you'd expect from an A8, with pure electric driving silence at very low city-commuting speeds.

Hard to tell apart

This new hybrid Audi looks very much like any other A8. Audi's designers have not been required to do much in the line of altering its shape. Packaging has also remained largely unchanged, as Audi's engineers have managed to contain the battery pack and electric motor within compact dimensions, which mean minimal sacrifices to passenger space and comfort.

Smooth looking limousine

One of the few visual clues to this A8 being different is the additional rear quarter panel charging port. Audi has also slightly reshaped its bumpers. But the really clever bits are all underneath, where Audi has worked its mechanical magic by seamlessly integrating the gasoline and electric elements of this A8's power- and drivetrain.

A V6 with V8 punch

Anchoring the performance of this A8 L 60 TFSI e is a 3-liter turbocharged V6 engine. In combination with a 14.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and electric motor, the A8 hybrid can deliver peak power of 443 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Those outputs guarantee swift performance, but it is the ability of this Audi to use pure electric power at low speed, and in congested traffic, which also boost its efficiency.

It is very light on gas

The A8 L 60 TFSI e has a deeply impressive brake energy harvesting ability. It can recoup a lot of kinetic energy each time you use the brakes, and that helps to load the batteries. The pure electric driving range is 25 miles, but it is the average consumption which really astounds. This is a large luxury car, with all the comfort trappings you'd expect, that will return 112mpg.

It might be light on gas, but it can be a gas to drive - too

Not only is this hybrid A8 dramatically efficient for a vehicle of its size, but it also provides surging performance when required. If you use all the power, it will run a true 0-60mph sprint in 4.9 seconds, which is quick enough to qualify it as a credible performance car. The electric motor is integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, and as such, gives immediate power assistance when needed.

A tri-mode hybrid system

Audi has spent a lot of time and technical skill on perfecting the interplay between gasoline and electric elements of this A8's powertrain. You can select three modes for the delivery of your stored electric power: EV, hybrid or hold. In EV mode the A8 L 60 TFSI e runs like a pure electric vehicle, until it exhausts the threshold of its battery power, and activates the gasoline V6. In hybrid mode, it seamlessly switches between the two. The hold mode enables a drive to effectively disable the electric drivetrain, and then activate it only when needed: such as a surge of overtaking acceleration.
