Introducing electric freedom

The new crossover from Audi debuted at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier this week in a very low key manner. The automaker designed the vehicle specifically for the Chinese market and it will be manufactured locally at the Foshan plant. The Q2L e-tron will be the first all-electric model by Audi for China and will be followed up by another EV model in 2020.

Straight from the boss

Audi CEO Bram Schot had this to say about the automaker and what they have in store for China. “With both the Audi Q2L e-tron and Audi e-tron electric models, we are launching a new era in China with our partner FAW. The compact SUV will be produced locally this year and, beginning in 2020, the Audi e-tron will also be produced in China, our largest and most important market worldwide.”

Not a bad starting point

The Q2 L e-tron will feature an electric motor that produces 134 horsepower and 214 lb-ft of torque. Audi has been mum on any further performance spec numbers but did disclose that 38 kWh battery pack would be good for a range up to 165 miles on a single charge.

A premium on interior space

The L in the new EV Q2 stands for long wheelbase as this version is 33 mm longer than a standard Q2. There are other subtle differences that the Q2 e-tron has like a partially enclosed grille and new air intakes.

No need for an exhaust

Other changes on the e-tron model will be a new rear bumper sans exhaust, a chrome-tipped diffuser, and aerodynamic alloy wheels.

The Q2 L e-tron will go on sale this summer for the Chinese market with no word on if the crossover will travel to other countries.
