These are the latest RS5 Turbo racing machines

To develop many of its best driving technologies, Audi goes racing. From Quattro all-wheel drive to durable turbocharging, Audi has always proved its latest innovations in competition, before marketing them in passenger vehicles. The world's best touring car series, is DTM, and here Audi had allowed six private teams, to campaign for the brand, in 2020. Let's meet the RS5s which will keep those four-rings in front.

Trick aero for the RS5

The BMC Air Filter RS5 Turbo is driven by Frenchman, Loic Duval. His car is prepared by Audi Sport Team Phoenix and like all other RS5 competition cars, it features very trick aerodynamics. The large rear wing adds downforce at speed, to keep Duval's car tracking with great stability at race pace. To reduce drag, two narrow carbon-fiber arms keep the RS5's rear wing attached to the compact trunk surface.

Red and white is a classic race car livery

Rene Rast campaigns this classically styled red-and-white RS5 Turbo, on behalf of Audi Sport Team Rosberg. And yes, that is a team founded by the legendary Rosberg dynasty, which includes father and son F1 world champions, Keke and Nico. Audi has mandated a special fuel blend for its RS5 Turbo DTM cars, which consists of 50% unleaded gasoline and the balance being sustainably sourced liquid fuel. This results in 30% lower CO2, per racing mile covered.

Small engine with big numbers

The Twin Busch Audi RS5 Turbo is driven by German racer, Mike Rockenfeller. As a 2020 season RS5 Turbo, it is powered by Audi's RC8 specification engine. Although relatively small at only 2-litres in capacity, this four-cylinder engine is boosted by a potent Garrett turbocharger. Peak power rates at 610hp and ensuring a surge of acceleration out of low-speed corners, is a hybrid system, proving additional battery-induced drivetrain power, for short bursts.

Very little weight about the front axle

Swiss driver, Nico Muller, drives the Castrol EDGE RS5 Turbo. This car is run by the Abt team and uses a striking green-and-white colorway. As mentioned, these 2020 RS5 Turbo DTM cars have mild-hybrid technology. Up to 60hp is available from this hybrid system, for 'push-to-pass' overtaking opportunities. Despite the Audi four-cylinder racing engine being capable of more than 600hp, it weighs very little, at only 187lbs. Having such a low engine mass figure, allows the RS5 Turbo to be hugely agile, when cornering.

Grey and black - the stealth option

British driver, Jamie Green, drives the rather stealthy Akrapovic RS5 Turbo in DTM. The black and grey colorway might be subtle, but this Audi RS5 DTM is every bit as advanced as any other. That means it drives through a Hewland DTT-200 six-speed sequential transmission. Jamie taps paddles to shift up or down, with the Hewland transmissions helping him along, with semi-automatic interfacing. A limited-slip differential helps to split power where it is needed, and prevents the RS5 Turbo DTM car, from having its huge power reserves, overwhelm traction.

Light and excellently balanced

Dutchman, Robin Frijns, is the pilot for this RS5 Turbo. It is the team Aral Ultimate car and features a dashing dual-tone blue graphic design, with bright yellow trim. Although it has an imposing and dramatic appearance, thanks to all its trick aero bits, the RS5 Turbo DTM car is remarkably light. With a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, the RS5 Turbo weighs only 2174lb in race trim. Driving dynamics are amazing, too, thanks to Eibach springs and DSSV dampers balancing the double-wishbone suspension. Pushrod axles also help to keep the car's weight centered.
