Latest Audi TT-RS Coupe Remains True to its Five-Cylinder Roots
Five-cylinder performance cars are rare and Audi's latest TT-RS is perhaps the best of them all.
Sharper looks for TT-RS
Audi's third-generation TT lifecycle upgrade, which happened last year, has only now been applied to the most potent TT-RS derivative. If you seek a compact German all-wheel-drive sportscar, there are not many to rival it.
Squat and powerful proportions
Although the styling upgrades mostly center on new LED lights front and rear, with a sharper grille design, the TT-RS profile remains instantly familiar. The compact cabin and two-door configuration is bunched, to create a car with powerful proportions.

New blue is turbocharged - literally
Audi has added a new color palette for the TT-RS, which includes the very fetching Turbo Blue hue pictured above. The wheel option shown here is the larger 20-inch diameter rim, which is really the best way to complement the TT-RS and its new suite of styling upgrades.

Twin-pipes not for show
Twin tailpipes flank a stout RS-specification rear diffuser and mark this TT as one which has more potency than any of its four-cylinder siblings. Aero ducts are cut into the bumper, too, to help with the intricate air-flow management of the TT-RS's rear section.

Fixed rear with planted aero
The TT-RS is a fast car with a short body, which means that its short wheelbase can make for a lively experience at speed. To counter any rear-axle lift, Audi's engineers have added a substantial fixed rear wing. It adds downforce to the rear and ensures you don't have any lift-off oversteer moments of anxiety.

There is room in the back, for your gear
It might be principally a driver's car, but this liftback coupe does have decent luggage capacity too. Total stowage for carry-on luggage is 12cu-ft, which isn't that bad for such a compact performance car.

A corner linking machine
The fundamental principle behind the TT-RS has not changed with its new styling upgrades. This remains a small car with a big engine. It is made to apex intimidating corners on unfamiliar roads, with RS-spec adaptive dampers helping you to find the perfect line.

Big speed and stoppers too
The latest TT-RS remains a massively potent car. It will run 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and power onto a top speed of 174mph. To ensure you can manage all that performance safely, there are very powerful carbon-ceramic brakes hiding behind those alloy wheels, supplied by Brembo.

A true driver's cockpit
The cabin might be snug, but build quality is outstanding and ergonomics flawless. All controls fall easily to hand and the driving position is excellent. A digital instrumentation stack keeps the driver informed and the steering wheel has paddle shifts for mastering that seven-speed S-Tronic gearbox.

That five-pot heart
Audi has more five-cylinder performance cars to its name than any other brand. Powering the TT-RS is the brand's fantastic 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine. It makes a wonderfully unique sound, thanks to that 1-2-4-5-3 ignition sequence. Powerful too, boasting 400hp, plenty for a car that weighs only 3196lb.
