Audi vehicles in the 2001 model year
From the Audi AG press release

Ingolstadt, 26 May 2000

The new 2001 model year will see the introduction of the 3.3 litre V8 TDI in the Audi A8. With its power output of 165 kW (225 bhp), a torque of 480 Nm and exemplary refinement, this engine is the perfect ambassador of Audi's TDI expertise.

Four valves per cylinder, common rail injection, two electronically controlled VTG turbochargers, charge-air cooling and exhaust-gas recirculation reflect the latest state of the art. The cylinder block of the V8 TDI is of vermicular-graphite cast iron (VGC), a particularly high-strength material. The use of VGC means its weight is ten percent lower than that of a conventional design.

A great deal of thinking has gone into the 1.6 litre basic engine for the A4. It has been given new valve gear with low-friction roller cam followers. Thanks to this measure, together with minor improvements to numerous components, torque has been increased and the engine made more environmentally friendly. This four-cylinder inline unit complies with the emission limits specified in EU IV, currently the most stringent European standard, with a correspondingly favourable tax classification.

Other vehicles in the various model series also satisfy the requirements of this standard in the new model year. Within the A4 range, these are the 1.8 T with 110 kW (150 bhp), the 2.4 with 121 kW (165 bhp) and the 2.8 with 142 kW (193 bhp). The same engine versions of the A6 also meet the requirements of the EU IV standard, as does the 4.2 litre V8 with 220 kW (300 bhp). The three petrol models in the A8 range (2.8 litre V6, 3.7 and 4.2 litre V8) will also be within the EU IV limits from June 2000.

The multitronic continuously variable automatic transmission will be offered for a second model in the new model year. Following the Audi A6 2.8 with 142 kW (193 bhp) engine, it will also be possible to order this pioneering transmission technology as an option for the 121 kW (165 bhp) A6 2.4 with front-wheel drive.

The multitronic unites the advantages of conventional transmissions and surpasses both the geared automatic transmission and the mechanical gearbox in terms of their respective strengths. It operates more smoothly than all previous automatic transmissions because it alters the ratio gradually and without any hint of jolting. And it runs more economically than mechanical gearboxes, until now the champion of this cause thanks to the fixed gear ratios which are in principle the most efficient solution, but nevertheless force the engine into speed ranges where fuel consumption becomes inflated. As things stand, the multitronic can therefore justifiably claim to be the concept that translates the driver's intentions with the greatest degree of accuracy.

The equipment specification of Audi models will also be upgraded for the new model year. The sports models S4 and S4 Avant, for example, will be equipped with Recaro sport seats and aluminium door mirror housings as standard. A particularly low-cost version of the navigation system Plus without TV tuner - an option for the A4, A6 and A8 model series - will be available in future. The system in this case includes the swivel monitor in the centre console, the integrated "concert" radio and the Driver Information System DIS. Dynamic route guidance based on the TMC data of radio traffic information is also part of the package.

The head airbag system SIDEGUARD will be part of the standard specification of the Audi A6 4.2 quattro and the S6 in the new model year. A front passenger seat with memory function for the electric adjustment will be available as an option for all A6 and S6 models.

New multi-function steering wheels with gear-shift function have been added to the equipment range for the Audi A8. The memory function for the electric adjustment of the front passenger seat can also be ordered for this saloon in future. A new aluminium hollow-spoke wheel (option) of size 8Jx18 with 245/45 ZR 18 tyres emphasises the sporty look of the A8 line and accentuates the special qualities of the running gear.

The equipment items and technical data quoted refer to the model range available in Germany. Subject to alterations and errors.
