The equipment and data stated here refer to the model range offered for sale in Germany. We reserve the right to make changes. Errors and omissions excepted.
With its attractive design, dynamic appearance and typical high quality the Audi A3, which is available in two and four-door body styles, goes right to the top of its class. Numerous design awards have served to underline its outstanding position.
Well thought out ergonomics are an outstanding feature of the interior. The high-grade materials used don't just look good, they feel equally good. The seats provide outstanding lateral support and fatigue-free travel over long distances.
Attraction, Ambition, Ambiente: equipment to cater for every taste
Naturally, as on every A3, the standard equipment includes two full-size airbags, side airbags at the front, pyrotechnic seat belt pre-tensioners front and rear, seat belt wearer identification at the front and belt-force limiters. The SIDEGUARD head airbag system, which sets new safety standards in the compact class, is available as an optional extra. SIDEGUARD is hidden from view in the car's roof. When triggered, a curtain about 15 centimetres thick inflates within a fraction of a second and protects the entire area between the A and C-posts of the car's body. Its compartments remain inflated for approximately five seconds, thus maintaining protection even if the car then rolls over or is involved in a secondary impact.
The electronic stability program (ESP) is standard equipment in all A3 models with a 110 kW or more powerful engine.
The height-adjustable driver's seat and the height- and reach-adjustable steering wheel enable any driver to find the most suitable position. Also included in the complete equipment is a child's seat attachment system conforming to the ISOFIX standard.
From 15-inch alloy wheels of lightweight design to electric windows and outside mirrors, central locking and modern four-channel ABS, the A3 Attraction - with its high-quality "Solo" cloth upholstery - has everything needed to make driving safe and pleasurable.
The Audi A3 Ambition will appeal to drivers looking for sporting performance. Its equipment list includes 6J x 15 six-spoke cast alloy wheels, firmer, slightly lowered sports suspension, sports seats with extra lateral support and a three-spoke sports steering wheel with leather-covered rim.
In addition, the standard equipment of the two-door Ambition includes a seat package with height-adjustable front-passenger seat and the Easy-Entry System. When the backs of the front seats are folded forwards, the seat bases also slide well forward to allow passengers to reach the rear seats easily. When the seats, which have "Staccato" cloth upholstery, are pushed back, they lock into their original positions.
This seat package is also standard equipment for the A3 Ambiente. Here the combination of cloth and Alcantara known as "Arabesque" is used. Other distinguishing features of the Audi A3 Ambiente, which features 15-inch 12-spoke alloy wheels, are remote central locking with convenient closure of the windows and optional sunroof, a four-spoke leather-covered steering wheel, a leather-covered gear lever knob and leather gaiter, illuminated make-up mirrors for the driver and front passenger and a central armrest at the front with integral storage compartment.
Further optional extras include a satellite navigation system with a GPS receiver integrated into the roof-mounted aerial, automatic air conditioning, automatically dimmed rear-view mirror and the Acoustic Parking System APS, which makes reversing into parking spaces easier.
For the A3 there is a choice of four spark-ignition engines with power outputs of 74 kW (101 bhp), 92 kW (125 bhp), 110 kW (150 bhp) and 132 kW (180 bhp) and two TDI diesels with outputs of 66 kW (90 bhp) and 81 kW (110 bhp). All A3s with engines up to 110 kW and front-wheel drive can optionally be combined with the convenient four-speed DSP automatic transmission.
The Dynamic Shift Program (DSP) adapts the shift points quickly and automatically to the road and traffic situation and the driving style of the person at the wheel.
A3 1.8 T quattro - guaranteed driving enjoyment
With the introduction of the Audi A3 quattro, Audi has again provided convincing proof of its expertise in four-wheel drive systems, even in the compact class. The quattro four-wheel-drive principle is ideal for translating concentrated turbo power into supreme on-road performance, and it also offers dynamism, safety and driving enjoyment of the highest calibre.
As in the Audi TT, the Audi A3 quattro's four-wheel-drive system employs an electronically controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch, which is particularly suitable for the demands imposed by transversely mounted engines and guarantees all the well-known advantages of the Audi quattro driveline.
The Audi A3 quattro is available with 110 kW (150 bhp) or 132 kW (180 bhp) turbocharged engines with five valves per cylinder and with 5-speed manual transmission. The impressive torque figures for the top-of-the-range power unit, the 132 kW (180 bhp) turbocharged engine with five valves per cylinder, disprove the belief that "there's no substitute for cubic capacity". The new-generation Motronic ME 7.5 engine management system varies the ignition timing, injected fuel quantity, boost pressure and throttle opening angle to the ideal values for the car's actual operating conditions. The accelerator pedal and throttle are linked electronically, ensuring excellent responsiveness and agility.
The 132 kW (180 bhp) engine takes the Audi A3 quattro up to a top speed of 226 km/h and also provides impressive torque. The peak value of 235 Nm is available over a wide engine-speed range from 1950 to 5000 rpm, ensuring optimum acceleration and flexibility even at low engine speeds. The Audi A3 1.8 T (132 kW) accelerates eagerly from 0 to 100 km/h, taking just 7.5 seconds.
