  • 44 percent increase on previous year in first quarter
  • Audi continues to expand more rapidly than the overall market
  • Strong growth also expected in the next few years

“Audi significantly increased its sales again on the Chinese market in the first quarter and consequently remains the most successful premium manufacturer in this country,” said Erich Schmitt, AUDI AG Board Member for Purchasing and responsible for the company’s activities in China.

Sales of Audi vehicles totalled 17,522 in the first three months. This represents an increase of 44 percent on the same period last year and means that Audi has once again expanded more rapidly in China than the overall market (overall market in first quarter: around 617,000 units, up 33 percent).

Audi sold 14,028 A6 and 2,817 A4 models, both produced locally, in China (total increase of 43 percent). 677 Audi vehicles (up 140 percent) were imported into China, 370 of which were of the luxury Audi A8 saloon (up 100 percent).

Vehicle sales increased by 52 percent to 6,395 units in March. Schmitt: “We are expecting double-digit growth rates again for the whole of 2004. We also anticipate that we will continue to expand at an equally high rate in coming years.”

Alongside the Audi A6, the Audi A4 has been built at the Changchun plant
since April 2003. The Audi A8, Audi A4 Cabriolet, allroad quattro and Audi TT are all imported into China. The new A8 was launched on the Chinese market
in the middle of last year, followed by the long-wheelbase version of the
Audi A8 6.0 quattro this year. The exclusive dealer network now comprises 96 dealerships in 57 major cities around China.
