Ultra-economical, ultra-clean: the Kraftfahrer-Schutz Automobile Club has awarded Audi and Bosch the “Golden Oil Droplet” for the latest generation of common-rail diesel injection systems with piezo inline injectors. The automobile club quoted the fact that this innovative injection system makes diesel engines even more economical, while cutting emissions, as the reason for its choice of Audi and Bosch as the recipient of its energy and environment award. This pioneering fuel injection technology has made its first appearance in two Audi models, the A8 3.0 TDI quattro and the A6 3.0 TDI quattro.

The advantage of the new technology is that the piezo injectors permit injection of much smaller, more precisely metered amounts of fuel at higher injection pressures. The piezo system simultaneously responds twice as fast as common rail injectors. The result is even finer atomisation of the fuel, better mixture preparation and more efficient combustion.

“All in all an efficient fuel injection system,” concluded the automobile club’s jurors in their unanimous verdict. They praised the fact that this system makes diesel engines cleaner, more economical and quieter. The engine of the Audi A8 3.0 TDI quattro and A6 3.0 TDI quattro is the first diesel in the full-size class to undercut the emission limits of the strict EU4 standard thanks to this progressive engine technology – without the need for a diesel particulate filter. In addition to the Audi A8 and the new Audi A6, this fuel injection technology will find its way into other Audi models and performance versions in future.
