AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – For the second year in a row, Audi has two engines earning spots on Ward’s 10 Best Engines list. For 2006, the 2.0T FSI turbocharged 4-cylinder, as found in the A3 and A4, and the 4.2-liter V8, as found in the S4, A6, and A8, engines take honors. The 4.2-liter V8 is a three-time winner having been named to the list in 2004 and 2005 as well. In recent years, Audi has also been on the list with its 2.7T bi-turbo V6, 1.8T four-cylinder, and 3.2 FSI V6 engines.

The 2.0T FSI is a 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled in-line four-cylinder with direct gasoline injection. This is the first engine ever to combine direct gasoline injection with turbocharging. The 2.0T FSI produces 200 hp between 5100-6000 rpm, and 207 ft.-lbs. of torque from 1800-5000 rpm. Directly injecting gasoline into the cylinder creates a cooler air/fuel mixture compared to manifold port-injection, which in turn allows for more efficient combustion. The final results are more power, and better fuel consumption, compared to a traditional port injection system.

Audi’s 4.2-liter V8 engine is yet another example of advanced engineering. The engine itself is compact and lightweight, made entirely of aluminum and designed to fit in the engine compartment of the S4. This five-valve per cylinder engine produces 340 hp at 7000 rpm (6800 rpm with Tiptronic) and 302 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3500 rpm. At 81 hp/liter, the 4.2 V8 has one of the highest horsepower to displacement ratios of any naturally-aspirated V8 on the road today.
