2.8 vs 1.8 manual trans - same?

Can I use the manual trans from a 1998 A4 1.8T quattro on a 2.8 quattro?

Yes, you can. Your car will pick up speed quicker, though will be pretty busy at highway speeds. The 1,8T overall ratio is lower than that of the 2,8, enough to hurt gas mileage.

I have 2 good used 5 spd boxes (1998 A4) sitting in the garage.
Too heavy to ship (unless someone hires someone to do it).

$280/each, $500 both, picked up.

One is from local parts dealer, never installed in my car (have receipt).

The other is out of my running (no defunct after parking it on the roof) own car (shifting very smooth, no noise).

$280/each, $500 both, picked up.

Im pretty sure your going to need the rear diff as well cause i think the final drive is different and is matched to that trans

That is VERY likely, and applicable for the Quattro.
Obviously not an issue for FWD (A4 and Passat)

If you're in England, you may wish to consider mine. It's still in the car, and still drives, so can be tested.
