Catalytic converter popped out of turbo...need some advice.

Last night while driving at close to open throttle, the cat dislocated from the turbo. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Should I have it welded or should I replace the cat? If I should replace the cat, should I go aftermarket and what are my options? Should I pop in a newer turbo while I'm down there (car has 90K). And finally, is it safe to drive to the shop?
Thanks, Jon G |

its been known to happen.
i thought someone posted that its illegal to repair a cat. though some places will do it.
also audi's warranty is much higher for the exhaust equipment...hopefully someone can confirm this. |
Common...(edit)
You can have it rewelded. People have stated that the cat to cat flange is simply a press fitting (cheap), so it will come out over time. Welding it should be a permanent fix.

90k miles is out of the emissions warranty. weld it. happened to me @ 50K, but Audi
replaced mine. welding it should be fine.

Welcome...
...to the club.
You're fine to drive on it, though you'll run pretty rich. As others have said, have it welded. If you can't find anyone to weld it, you can find a drop-in replacement at ECS Tuning. Good luck Andy |
You should gut the cat and re-weld your old one.
Since you don't have emissions testing.

Re: Catalytic converter popped out of turbo...need some advice.
just replaced both of my cats in my 97 a4 2.8 Man it was a pain in the ass. I got 2 aftermarket ones. The dealer wanted $1000 for each cat and 250 for labor i was like no F**ken way. i went to www.all-catalytic-converters.com and bought my cats for 250 a piece what a deal!!. and when i installed them both and installed new sensors man now it sounds great. these guys do a good job. i suggest calling them they have a friendly associate. i talked to mike well anyways im out.

Wouldnt his post 02 throw codes afterwards?
For cat inefficiency.
|
Would it through codes or put the car into limp?
good point

Ahh yes, you reminded me of yet another thing on my to do list...

As everybody has already said, welcome..
Happend to me about 6 months ago, simple re-weld shoudl do the trick if it split on the seam, which it looks like it did..
|
thanks everyone.
