Some pics of a recent project if you are interested... [LONG and full of pics]
So the story behind this car is that we wanted to have some fun and do something a little different. The car used to be my wife's car. As some of you know, the 12v V6 is a workhorse of an engine and very reliable. Nothing but the most reliable for our ladies, right!?
But in the late spring, she scored a great deal on a one year old Jetta GLI, so the light turned on in my head and I figured this would make a nice project car. I started by putting in some Penske Racing coilovers...thanks for the help Tomasz at StartUpRacing! Then, out with the V6: In with a 4-cylinder turbo. Not your normal 1.8T or stroker swap here. We used a VW ABA bottom end (built with Scats and Wisecos), and a VW 16v head (build with supertech valves, HD springs, and Ti Retainers). Some European guys have been doing these swaps for a while. Also, think back to the racing days of B5 A4s with naturally aspirated 2.0L 16v engines. The Axis Motorsport tribute but with boost added: We put an intake manifold together using the 16v flange and an AEB plenum and runners. Works like a charm: One custom engine bracket (driver's side): Intercooler (note the A/C delete): I have to give credit where credit is due. I did not weld anything here. The fabricator, Jodi Doyle, did some awesome work throughout: 3" downpipe (remains 3" right to the rear muffler, then splits to twin 3.5" tips). Also featuring an exhaust manifold for a 16v longitudinal VW Parati made by SPA Turbo: Modded rear head flange for -6AN fitting to bring water to the turbo: Getting close...fab work is mostly done: Wiring and plumbing: Here is how is stands today after completing an open track day at LimeRock. We logged 197.7 on-track miles that day. The street tune was set to about 14psi (it was about 2 weeks after first startup). However, in the last week or so, I turned up the boost and I have a pretty good street tune at 30psi. Intake temps remain under 40*C all the time when the car is moving. It will be tuned on a dyno next week. Hope you guys like it! |
