temperature gauge is always low, even after long driving..

is that normal? right now in NY its about 37-50 degrees. the engine oil tempurature always 2 bars up from 60. and the coolant temp gauge is always on the second big bar inward. this was after a bit of highway driving and some light traffic. i have seen the needle go half way but only in stop and go traffic. is this normal? thanks

could be thermostat going bye bye..

Search for "coolant temp sensor" in the archives.

Common failure...unfortunately.

bentz i'm in nyc..same thing temp takes very long to get to mid point..and oil stays very low...

let me know what you find out...i'm curious.

mine doesn't move.

temp. sensor failure seems to be the common diagnosis here.

How is the heat inside the car?

One more point...

with coolant temp sensor failures, normally the coolant gauge won't register a normal temp, but oil comes up to normal temp fine.

With a faulty thermostat, either the engine will overheat, or it won't come up to temp at all (oil and coolant). It depends on whether the thermostat is stuck open or closed.

yep yep...

i had that prob when i bought the car- free dealer fix of course, but they spend HOURS diagnosing it.. turns out there are TWO temp sensors, and of course the second sensor was the bad one.. good luck!

my heat works great...nice and warm..temp sensor still shows low..

Kris Hansen 11-19-2002 07:10 AM

If you have good heat, I would say temp sender.. If not, it could be the thermostat.
