Torque braking... bad/good?

I've heard both from people I trust, so I dunno whats right. You know, downshifting to use the engine's torque to slow you down... seems like less wear on the brakes... i'm not talking about jamming it into 1st... just slowly downshifting. Truckers use it to go down hills... Any opinions? TIA

I don't do it because it is extra stress on the engine and clutch. Breaks are cheaper to replace than those. Unless of course I am playing in the twisties and want to keep the rpms up to blow out of the next turn.

Won't work on DBW cars. The computer won't let the engine rev if gas & brake are applied.

DBW?

trucker's have about 18 gears...we have 5, it's reasonable for them

i do it sometimes when i'm bored. but, there is this whole braking system installed thats really easy to use, so i'm usually lazy and just lay on the big pedal. :)

"drive by wire"....throttle is controlled by the computer rather than a cable

JCF 10-08-2001 06:46 PM

Thats cool, i was just wondering, i do it a lot sometimes... but i guess i wont

now. Thanks!

JCF 10-08-2001 06:47 PM

Oh, i guess mine doesn't have that... damn...

since i didnt even know about it the first place, no big deal apparently.
