Torque braking... bad/good?

Torque braking... bad/good?
I've heard both from people I trust, so I dunno whats right. You know, downshifting to use the engine's torque to slow you down... seems like less wear on the brakes... i'm not talking about jamming it into 1st... just slowly downshifting. Truckers use it to go down hills... Any opinions? TIA

Re: Torque braking... bad/good?
I don't do it because it is extra stress on the engine and clutch. Breaks are cheaper to replace than those. Unless of course I am playing in the twisties and want to keep the rpms up to blow out of the next turn.

trucker's have about 18 gears...we have 5, it's reasonable for them
i do it sometimes when i'm bored. but, there is this whole braking system installed thats really easy to use, so i'm usually lazy and just lay on the big pedal.
