Is it possible to add steering wheel controls?

Is the wiring in place on the 03 A4s?

Yes and no... (more)

The steering column electronic systems control module has the pinouts for it whether you have the multifunction wheel or not. However, I think something goes between those little switch modules you have pictured and that control module, besides just the wiring. Look at the relevant pinouts in the control module:

C - Connector for multi-function steering wheel/Tiptronic/steering wheel heating
7 - Push-button "-"
8 - Multi-function steering wheel "+" - Power supply
9 - Multi-function steering wheel data
10 - Heater sensor/push-button "+"
11 - Multi-function steering wheel dimmer
12 - Tiptronic Ground (GND)
13 - Steering wheel heating "+"
14 - Steering wheel heating "-"

That's interesting, I didn't think you could retrofit the steering wheel. Do keep us posted with more info if this is possible and ofcourse the $ investment with install. Did you approach the dealer?

Certainly it sounds like a cool idea but I am pretty confident I won't "swerve" if I just reach out to the car stereo :).

Your eyes "reach" for the stereo too and there is no one looking at the road :-)

If it does involve swapping the entire steering wheel, it isn't worth it - the airbag would need to be swapped too (assuming you have the 3 spoke wheel now) and that's pricey. But, if you can infact just install the buttons on the 3-spoke via some makeshift means, then it would be very cool and shouldn't be too expensive.

1) Where'd you get the diagram? 2) Anybody actually already buy the switches?

I'm wondering if they're just "resistor" coded or have a protocol chip.
