Tranny Swap Question
Hey guys, I've been wondering if a 2.7 6-speed gearbox would swap into a 5-speed 2.8. Just curious.

any audi techs out there?

I don't recall anyone doing this swap.
The six speed should bolt right in. The driveshafts are probably the same, the shift linkage might need to be changed. I'm not sure about the final drive ratios. That would be the main thing to check. |

That's why you need to check the ratios. In many cases, Audi just squishes the gears together and the five speed and six speed have the same top gear.
In the Miata, I considered going to a six speed, until I found out that the rpm's would actually be higher on the highway with the six speed. |
6-speed swap into 2.8?
Sound like a lot of work. IMHO doing this in a 4.2 give you a lot more reward for similar amount of work. And I think the fuel consumption will be similar to that of 2.8. Saw a 4.2 6-speed on Fourtitude, sweet...

It's a lot more work on the four-two.
He's swapping stick to stick on the two-eight; the four-two requires tons of conversion (pedals, linkage, ecu, etc) |

drive ratios are different, 6th is a LOT taller, feels like it anyways, dont know the exact ratios

Yup you can use a 6 speed and parts from a 2.7tt.
You'll need: axles rear diff prop shaft trans possibly a flywheel... You can also look at using alternative gear or a european trans from a TDI if you want numerically lower gears or earlier 01A transmissions if you want numerically higher gears it's all a matter of what your goals are. |
