Time to get one of those "xtool vag401".
|
From your readout, it would appear that the Immobilizer module on the steering column has failed. The official VAG fix for that module failure is to replace the complete steering column assembly ($1,7000 part at discounted price). There is a company that can repair that module (Welcome to SpeedoSolutions) for a much lower cost. You can also clear that DTC so you can start your car. However, it may work a few days or weeks until the module fails and issues a DTC.
|
Yikes.
So it happened right after I plugged in my VCDS tool. However I plugged it in before I had booted up the laptop. Usually, all other times I have had the laptop powered on before connecting the cable. Do you think there is anyway this could have fritzed out the car to cause this? |
Connecting your laptop, either power off or power on, to the OBD-II port will not damage any electrical component in the car. Since you have VCDS, have your checked the Acc/Start module (Address 5) to clear the DTC and see if the car will start? If it does, then your immobilizer module is defective.

Yep I reset the codes with VCDS and it went back to normal right away. Wow yours was replaced twice? At least it was under warranty. Dropping 2k every random so many thousand miles/years to replace the column is not ideal is it... |
The bad news is that both times they tried the re-set first. It worked for a few weeks and then the problem returned. Good luck! |
I should have listened to A6Gary and KevinGary and gotten the steering column module replaced...
The problem struck again, only this time, I was 205 miles from home, and without my laptop and VCDS cable... I was hoping my Carista stashed in glovebox would save me, but unfortunately it did not fire up. I guess that with the car in that immobilized state, that the bluetooth operation of the car was not yet operational, and therefore, the Carista had no chance. My only option? A tow to the nearest Auto Repair shop (who, luckily, claimed to be Audi/BMW/Merc specialists). The wallet damage? $190 for the tow. $375 labor to replace the steering column module. $225 to program it to the car. $950 for the steering column module itself. Unfortunately they could not source me a brand new module, and instead used a reclaimed unit from a 2012 A6. Not ideal, but there we have it. Also unfortunately, I found after leaving the shop right after they closed for the day - the steering wheel was not put on quite straight. So it's back to my regular local Audi place next week to get that sorted... What an episode. It just goes to show; never ignore these problems and hope they will go away. They will come back. And at the most inconvenient time & place... |
