Expensive Oil Change
 

I brought my 2013 A8L in for an oil change to the dealer and was quoted $199 and 90 minutes to complete. This seems expensive and lengthy.

What are others experiencing?

My local dealer (DC area) wanted $300 for a change. I decided to do my own and it only costs me $95 and 10 minutes of my time. You don't even have to crawl under the car, just suck the old oil out through the dipstick hole using a mighty-vac.

Oil and filter will cost you somewhere around 100 bucks.

Is it worth a 100 bucks to have someone else do the job?

As Tim said, he does his by sucking out the old oil. And that's ok for some but if my guy ever wanted to do that instead of a proper drain, I'd find someone else to do the work.

And I'm not sure you can do all the work (oil filter) from above on a 4 liter engine. Not to mention inspecting stuff under the car while you are draining fluids.

Filter is $15 from dealer, get two 5qt jugs of Castrol 5w40 at walmart for $50 (Or autozone and tell them to price match, which they will). $199 seems cheap from a dealer to be honest. The only pain of doing it yourself is removing/reinstalling the noise insulation underneath, probably takes an hour and a half total for oil change if you aren't rushing.

I must be lucky... My dealer recently did a change on my tdi and my total cost was $120. Which for a diesel oil change was basically the cost of the supplies alone.

You don't specify which engine you have as a 2013. The video provided is for the 4.2L which was discontinued in 2012.

While I understand there is some bias with people wanting to have the drain plug removed for oil changes, please remember that Audi designed some of these vehicles to use an oil extractor and to NOT use the drain plug routinely. They went so far as to provide extractors to dealers specifically to service these vehicles.

I second the previous poster about cost and ease. $15 for a filter and less than $50 for 10qts of Mobil 1 or equiv at Walmart is hard to beat. Would never consider spending $200 to let dealer do such an easy job!!

I have a 13 4.0t, looked over the alldata manual and can't find any reference to oil extraction or specific procedure for removing engine oil. Not implying there should be, but your comment made me go look. In looking at services that would require the oil to be drained it just says "Engine oil is drained". So I think it's safe to assume no extractor is required and draining through the drain plug is acceptable. If someone with access to erWin or ElsaWin could check that documentation that would be great.

I have the '14 4.0TFSI. the latter 4.2 guys have it easy with top side access to the filter element and get to use an extractor. THis method also works well for my MB's.
I hoped we could get the same, but our filter is bottom access and we have to drain from the pan. the difficult part looks to be removing the belly panels to gain access.
This should be easy-peasey if it is on a lift, more challenging if you are on the ground.
I'll be doing myown when my service plan expires...of find a non-dealer Audi specialist.

Seems excessive at $199. Just had my 15 4.0t done by a local Audi shop for $135.

For removing the belly panels/noise insulation, I suggest buying a cordless electric screw driver and set of socket adapters for it (couple of the screws are torx). Probably 30 bucks at walmart, and you can use it for a million other things. This makes it ten times easier to remove the quarter turn fasteners and other screws.
