Transmission plans:
Here's what I would like to do within the next 2 months...
- Flush and refill with Redline MT90 (A friend did this on an A4 and said the difference was night/day) - Linkage rebuild (see link) -A4 tranny mounts I'm going to put it up on a lift next weekend and take a closer look at the mounts and linkage bushings. I found MT90 too thin.........
Switched back to Mobil 1 75w-90.
The reason I say MT90 was too thin, is I could hear the gears in my gearbox whine. Plus shifting was very notchy. Drained MT90, installed Mobil 1, synth, and my gearbox is smooth & no noises. |
Is it smoothe even when cold?
it seems like with the MT-90, as it warms up it gets smoother?

Thankyou for this post!
I have been trying to figure out how to re build the shift linkage bar for a while now.

a few questions:
Easy to access the tranny? I'd be using jackstands, might be able to get access to a lift (probably not though). Is this something I could do in a driveway?
How do you get the old fluid out? (Is there a drain on the bottom or do you have to get it from the top? Any special tools needed? Thanks, Mike AWOT Axis of Evil # |
A few good write-ups on the B5 forum...
you need a special socket for the drain bolt.

Re: I found MT90 too thin.........
I have read (do not remember where exactly) that only a GL4 rated transmission fluid should be used in the Audis, whereas the MOBIL 1 is a GL5 rated lubricant and should not be used because it eats away at the synchros in the transmission.
Might want to check into this further before problems arrise. |
Previously discussed issue..........

Just be sure to remove the TOP plug first...
...if you remove the bottom and drain the fluid, then the fill plug is siezed...you're screwed.
Also, I used redline in my CQ..and it was better during the cold mornings....but then I changed it to the stock stuff (G00500 ?) and it was AMAZINGLY better...like new, really. Just my two cents. :) |
