Dead Throttle

Good day all,

My 2018 A5 Coupe has a weird no throttle condition. If you slow down to turn on to a street or road, when you get off the brakes and try to accelerate, sometimes there is no response for a couple seconds.

It's like the transmission can't decide what to do.

This is my third A5 and this drives me nuts.

Anyone else ever experience this?

This is normal for this car. I'm assuming you were driving in D. Unfortunately, Audi has programmed the transmission for maximum fuel economy in D, and it just doesn't shift down quickly enough when needed. This combined with the decreased throttle sensitivity in D creates this situation. I usually use the paddle shifters to shift down a couple of gears when this is about to happen.
Other people have reported a throttle lag off the line, which I have not experienced. Response is always good from a complete stop. Only happens when you are cruising or slowing down and then try to accelerate.

Yep, cause in Sport mode it's better.

Besides this, I have a couple other annoyances that really tick me off. Disappointing. :(

I started typing and noticed that you took the words out of my fingers. It's not that the throttle is necessarily dead, it is that the speed and gear chosen by the transmission result in low RPMs and torque.
When I want to accelerate out of a corner quickly, I use the paddles to downshift prior to engaging the corner. It is natural for me as this is the first automatic I have ever owned and I'm used to doing it anyway. I enjoy doing it as I feel more involved in the driving of the car. :)

I almost never drive in D.

What is interesting to me is the OP has an A5. I somehow got the impression this was an S5 issue that the A5's didn't suffer from?

Holy crap.

I’ve asked the dealer if there’s a re-flash and they claim there’s nothing.

All Audis exhibit this behavior to some degree in an effort to maximize mileage ratings.

It's not really an issue because Audi is doing this on purpose. Audi's lineup is all tuned like this. Reviews of the new A6 and A7 all say the same thing.
