How many hours of labor for a "good" shop to install clutch/flywheel?

tpierce 11-19-2007 03:31 PM

i thought the book time was around 9 hours

you haveing clutch problems?

UR-Idiot Savant-S6 11-19-2007 03:54 PM

Yikes...........no problems currently but with the other "changes".......

I'm putting in a JB Racing 10.5 lb flywheel and Southbend FW Clutch to get power to the ground. Oh well...........what's another $800?? God bless my wife.

It took my indy mechanic 24 hours (saga)

He charged me $750 labor + $100 for resurfacing the flywheel. I provided all my own parts which I bought from various sources online.

He'd never worked on a urS6 before, but he did work on B5/6 A4 and B5 S4's and he does specialize in just Audi's. His personal car is a Stage I B5 S4.

I got a new clutch, resurfaced flywheel, t/o bearing, front diff oil, new front diff seals, new rear main seal new clutch slave.

Also installed the timing belt, front crank seal, front cam seal, water pump, serp belt, and idler pully at the same time for an extra $300.

Here was the plan: Day 1, car on lift, drop the trans, send out flywheel for resurfacing. Day 2, reassemble, reinstall, done!

Here's what really happened:

Day 1. Trans was out of the car in about 2 hours. I watched the whole thing. Impressive. The flywheel was bagged and sent out with a courier to the flywheel shop--still warm.

Day 2 went well until trying to get the clutch slave in, he stayed up till about 1 am trying to finish the car up but the clutch slave was a real biatch till he called it a night. I know he wasn't bull****ting me cause I was in the shop till about 10pm myself watching (he didn't mind, and I had no other transportation...)

Day 3. Car is finally back together around 6pm. I pay and drive away. 9k miles later and everything is working great.

If you're in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area I would highly reccomend this guy. (no it's not Anderson Motorsport)

Here are his rates, I think they are very fair (parts not included)

Clutch S4 $750
A4 $700

Thanks for the info.........

I'm pretty lucky and have 2 very well known Audi shops within 10 miles of me here in NJ. KMD tuning and Quattrohaus. I'm going to price both. I'd probably never go the direction I'm going in without them nearby as I'm getting out of my skill set now.

That slave is a bitch. I wonder if he had the same issue I did...

Which is: do NOT connect the hydraulic line before bolting the slave in. It seems like a good idea (the fitting is hard to get to, you'll keep brake fluid out of your eye, etc.) but it's REALLY hard to get the piston compressed while aligning it when the line is attached.

I spent hours and hours on that too.

Don't be a wimp... DIY.

it's not that fun of a job while the car is on a lift

i cannot imagine doing it on the ground.

Zwoobah 11-19-2007 05:51 PM

that picture does not give you a good idea of the space constraints in kevin's garage

i doubt that he could fully open either door of the S4. i'm still in awe.
