Those runnings HANS, 2" shoulder belt or is 3" fine?

I just bought a Hans and the only dilemma I have is which belt to buy? I know the Hans is designed to use the 3" belt and "roll over a bit" versus the 2" which mounts flat.

Any draw backs for either set up and what you recommend as a new user.

Roll bar is going in now and the Harness is next.

All this money to go no faster than before. Argh. I still feel better about it though.

Fairfax 4.0T 01-20-2009 06:39 PM

I didn't notice any difference with either belt size.

Hi John, my car initially had 3" belts which I used for a year with my Hans device. This year, the belts expired, so I had to install new belts. I went with the 2" which are supposed to only be used with a Hans device.

My personal experience is that the 2" belts just seem right when using them with a Hans. They fit perfectly over the shoulder portion of the Hans. However, if someone is driving your car and doesn't have a Hans, there could be a liability issue for you if they wreck because the 2" belts say for use only with a Hans device. When the 3" belts are used with a Hans, the fit over the Hans doesn't seem right, although I'm sure its safe.

I personally am happy I went with the 2" belts for use with my Hans device. My brother drove my car without a Hans device and using the 2" belts, and I wasn't concerned. The person who sold me the 2" belts said the 2" belts could be used with or without a Hans device, but the instructions for the 2" belts said to use only with a Hans device.

Another Drew 01-20-2009 07:02 PM

Both are fine. Keep in mind if you get 2", it can't be used without a HANS.

jimax bro 01-20-2009 07:46 PM

That's the mixed message: 2" is okay w/o Hans but none of documentation backs it up.

magnetic1 01-20-2009 08:32 PM

Im buying new harnesses shortly... will be 3" for HANS.

Same as Ive been using all along. What kind of harnesses you getting? Im looking at Schroth Hybrid3s.

Wind-n-Water 01-20-2009 11:23 PM

I've been using 3"...

1 of my final checks before going out on track, is to make sure the shoulder harness rides over the HANS correctly... Just a forced hobbit of being used to check lists.

What kinda tether HANS model did you get? slider? quick release? or standard? This yr I finally upgraded to the slider (which requires the wider backing plate for the helmet anchors). Before that, my head rotation was a bit limited... on sharper corners, I would turn my head and reach the HANS head-turning limit and had to move my eye balls to see further around. Sounds crazy I know, but turns out I drive w/ my eye balls centered and rotate my head instead! LoL!

I now have an extra set of wide-sized anchor backing plates (slider upgrade came w/ a set. My helmet already have the wide style anchor plates), and (non-sliding) quick release tether that I don't need anymore. Let me know if you could use them.

jimax bro 01-21-2009 02:21 AM

Went with slider tether.

jimax bro 01-21-2009 02:22 AM

Schroth Hybrid3s or Sparco (OG Racing clearance version). Not sure which yet.

jimax bro 01-21-2009 02:25 AM

Thanks Drew. A lot of shops are pushing 2" saying not problem w/o tHans hough.

bobster4 01-21-2009 02:56 AM

Mine are 3" and would just recommend that as well. Have the quick release tethers too.

Still limited side to side viewing (only an issue in the paddock) but very easy to get the HANS on and off.

'Nova more S4 01-21-2009 04:39 AM

did Jim tell you about the discount on HANS i found?

jimax bro 01-21-2009 04:43 AM

Yep. Thanks.

jimax bro 01-21-2009 04:44 AM

I was very intrigued by the quick release. A slider tether with QR is about to be released..

Jretal 01-21-2009 05:04 AM

?? you can't just say that and walk away ;)

email me if you must :)

Jretal 01-21-2009 05:06 AM

what, are you feeling like your brother is one-upping you now?

:-P

The only thing that I've 'read' about the 2" vs 3" is that the 2" will lay nicer on the device vs the 3" which will ride up on the edges a little bit. not sure how detrimental that is.

jimax bro 01-21-2009 05:35 AM

LMAO!

Jimax 01-21-2009 05:56 AM

He better say the OG Racing ones, since those are the ones he made me buy. haha

bobster4 01-21-2009 05:58 AM

That would be the best of both worlds then. I would like the extra side to side movement but won't

give up the quick release.

Since I don't have the quick release steering wheel, I can't get into the car with helmet and hans on without banging into the car/cage. The quick release hans is very easy to take and put back on.

Jretal 01-21-2009 06:03 AM

he's going to one-up you Jim... sibling rivalry at its best!

01-21-2009 06:57 AM

Some manufacturer's also offer 3" belts that are stitched to 2" in the HANS area..

I know Teamtech does that, I'm sure others do too...

<i>"H 3-2-3 HARNESS FOR YOKE
TYPE HEAD &amp; NECK
RESTRAINTS
This harness revision can be done to our
new or re-webbed unpadded SFI
harnesses. The harness is still classified
as a 3" harness, but contours down to a
2" harness by folding and sewing the
inside and outside edges where it will
come in contact with the HANS® yoke.
Then as it reaches the top of the shoulder
it returns to a 3" harness. It is specially
designed to hold down the HANS yoke
with or without the sternum strap. The
TEAMTECH® H 3-2-3 Harness revision
still complies with the 3" ruling for the
fact that when the HANS is not being
used by the wearer 3" webbing still is in
contact with the driver after simple
webbing adjustments. This revision still
maintains the strength of a 3" harness."</i><ul><li><a href="http://www.teamtechmotorsports.com/08_Catalog.pdf">Page 9 of the PDF...</a></li></ul>

cuz I need to visit the bank :-P

Jimax 01-21-2009 11:14 AM

unforutunately, $695 is the going price for HANS devices.

bobster4 01-21-2009 11:28 AM

Here is what OGRacing's prices are:

Seems the Extra Series that I have is about $200 cheaper than I paid. :/<ul><li><a href="http://www.ogracing.com/catalog/1-Driver/23-Hans-Devices">cleek</a></li></ul>

Jimax 01-21-2009 11:38 AM

look like sport series for me.

bobster4 01-21-2009 01:13 PM

Its all you will need for now. You might want to upgrade to a lighter one when you get into racing.

jimax bro 01-21-2009 04:12 PM

LOL. Heavier car w/horrid front suspension = tough to one up an E36

jimax bro 01-21-2009 04:14 PM

Supposedly, February release. $50.

Jretal 01-22-2009 06:18 AM

WTF? the price goes up $100 per size? That seem strange to anyone else?

Jretal 01-22-2009 06:18 AM

buy a 2nd for me and I'll pay you back over time ;)

Jretal 01-22-2009 06:19 AM

bah, details details...

just let hte air out of his tires when he's not looking! :-P

totally kidding, I swear. At least just steal his keys and make him sit there searching for them... that'd be funny enough :)

Jimax 01-22-2009 06:50 AM

LOL, since we almost lost my keys at NJMP, I now take a second set of keys with me :)

A certain asian who sells brakes almost lost my keys at NJMP. Car was just sitting there in the paddock. I think he left them in someone else's car by mistake or something. So now, I take a second set of keys and leave them in the truck. :)

Jimax 01-22-2009 06:52 AM

Sure, can I charge usurious rates of interest? Hehe

Jretal 01-22-2009 06:59 AM

Did you really have to use the word 'usurious'? I mean, really :-P

most would say 'ridiculous' or the like... you have a thesaurus sitting infront of you or seomthing? :-P

that being said, feel free to charge whatever interest. I'll just call up the pres and get it wiped out when I'm not able to pay for it and get it for free instead :-P

Jretal 01-22-2009 06:59 AM

lol... priceless.

John, make sure to hide the 2nd set of keys too :-P

Jimax 01-22-2009 07:08 AM

Usurious was the first word that popped in to my mind! Paging APK for backup...

Sorry, no thesaurus here. Well, I do have one available online, but I didn't use it. LOL

Oh, you want a bailout from the Messiah, eh? Hahahahah.

Jimax 01-22-2009 07:09 AM

&lt;changes code to keypad on truck's driver's door&gt;

'Nova more S4 01-22-2009 12:03 PM

that's one of the best things about fords

if only I could remember the code for my wife's suv.

Jimax 01-22-2009 12:08 PM

There's a sticker somewhere with the code

They put the sticker in different places for each vehicle. On my truck, it's affixed to the back of the seatback of the rear seat, which is permanent, and doesn't come out without undoing bolts and stuff.

Or alternatively, you can VAG it for the code.

The Ford truck forums will have the location and you can just look for the sticker.

jimax bro 01-22-2009 04:56 PM

They are trying to move inventory. Medium/Large is most popular. Small isn't hence the price diff.
