Q7 no start, no communication
 

Hi, was hoping I might be able to get some insight here.. I have an 07 Q7 4.2 with 105K. Last week during frigid cold here in Boston the car stalled shortly after starting up. Did this a few times then seemed ok. Later while driving it completely cutout and would not start or even turn over. Had it towed home. Car will not crank now and I am getting a low battery warning on the dash, esc fault, and adaptive headlight fault. When I put the key to the on position the fan comes on at a very high speed. Also, very weird, the CD changer starts going through the discs. It is a stock radio. All other electrical in interior is fine, lights etc.. The battery tested bad, so I replaced it, was almost time for a new one anyways. There is no communication from the OBD port. I checked for power and ground there and got 12V. But when I checked pin 7 got nothing. So far I have checked all fuses and tested all relays save the few next to the steering column. Anybody have any tips for the next diagnostic steps? Thanks!

Try disconnecting the battery ground lead for a few minutes then when you re-connect it, make sure it connects well straight away with no flickering on and off. It sounds like there is some logic corruption somewhere to me....

Thanks Edd, when I take off the ground from battery and reconnect, I do get a bit of flickering. Also should mention I did a parasitic drain test and after 5 minutes there were no drains.

Just realized the passenger side floor is soaked after rain. I am going to clean the drains today. Water seems to be coming in just under the glove box. What is over there in terms of electrical that could cause this?

check under the passenger seat. You have two control modules that can cause your problem.
1. Vehicle Electrical System Control Module 2 -J520-
2. Transmission Control Module (TCM) -J217-

Ok will do. I actually have the seat partially removed as I was heading there anyways. Once I find these modules, how does one test them?

Sounds like the alternator quit. See if you can get a good battery or fully charge the one you have and see if the car starts. If it does start let it run for a minute and then pull the positive cable off the battery while it's running and see if it cuts out, if it does then you know if its your alternator.

need to scan for codes to see any areas if TCM is bad or the Vehicle Electrical System Control Module 2 -J520- .
example:
Perform Guided Fault Finding or Guided Functions before replacing or removing the control module. Refer to vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
Read out the control module identification and coding from the previous transmission control module (TCM) (J217) and J520.

Thank s so much again for taking your time to help me out. I probably should have mentioned I am not a pro, just a guy trying to rule out as many problems before this car gets shipped to the dealer. As I mentioned previously, there is no communication from the car. I have checked for power and ground at the port and its fine. I am wondering how to physically check the j520. Looking at the pin assignment on the j520 I see only a few pins used. However, one caught my attention which is the glove box unlock motor activation. Mine is currently not working and was before. I guess my question is.. if I check for power and or continuity at pins 105 and 113 (can-h and can-l) will that give me aome insight as to the functionality of this module (j520)? Sorry in advance if this is a completely ridiculous and naive question. Thanks again

Sorry didnt see your comment on the bottom there. So how can I test the module with no vag communication?

It is hard to find in the manual still looking.
I assume you have check all the fuses on the right side panel?

Thanks. I appreciate it. I did. There were a few blown, power outlets, I replaced them. I just saw that the j520 is fuse 5 in carrier 1. That was visually ok, but I will test that one.

Everything that I am reding talks about no power to the ECU. attach is a relay J271 in the ECU.

I believe there is a few boxes of some kind under the passenger foot-well carpet, os there may be water damage there as well.

Thats the first relay I looked at. Tested fine. I may replace it anyways for peace of mind.

Pulled out the j271 relay and replaced it, no difference. Tested for power at relay and got 12V. Wondering now how to start looking at the various modules. A VW tech indicated to me that the only way to test these modules is to replace them with a known working unit. Is that the case? Will the car run if the faulty module has been replaced without it being coded to the car? Thanks

Can anybody answer this?

If I have a faulty module, specifically either of the onboard power supplies or the gateway, if they are replaced (individually) will I know if this is the problem without having the ability to code them? Thanks!

Everything seems to point at the ECM, remove your wipers and plastic dip tray. Then look at your ECM on the passenger side, look for water or corroded pins.

Thanks, will do. I am also going to check for power and continuity from the J271 main power supply relay socket to the appropriate terminal on the ecm harness to make sure there isnt a problem in between. If there is no problem I can assume its the ECM? such a bummer. Do these fail commonly?

Thanks Smith. Yes, I have checked for power going into the main relay and its there. I will check for power getting to the ECM this weekend. Can you elaborate on your previous idea. Which MVB's should I be checking? The various modules to see if they are communicating?

I have study your fault codes, you have a losS supply power fault which can be cause by your battery or your CAN BUS.
All of the modules for which you have "no comm" error use CAN-bus to communicate between each other. CAN-bus is two wires, you can recognize them because they are twisted pair to shield from interference. The wires are usually next to each other in the connector and usually same color with different colored stripes.
Try checking the CAN-gateway coding, if it's OK, check the CAN-bus wiring.

From your notes you replace your battery I believed what you have mention?
Did your reprogram the VCDS system for the ECM to read the new battery?
Is the battery over 12.5v fully charge right now?

I did just replace the battery, that was after the problem, I was under the impression the new battery did not have to be coded? If so I will do it. Battery is fully charged. I will check the gateway coding. Just to go back one post, you mentioned checking the MVBs... Should I be looking for something like this... The J533 (Gateway) has 125 as engine electronics, I should be looking for 1's there correct?

Sounds like the wiring or Connectors from/to Transmission Control Module (J217) are faulty in some way. That;s where I'd start. You can check in VAGcom - Measuring Value Block (MVB) 125+

those codes point to the TCM. It's listed under 'auto-trans' on VCDS
Click the 'auto trans' button when you are in the main menu.
Possibly water ingress in the TCM / connector, or a broken wire.

That's results from ECU and ABS from your code list. Is VCDS not connecting to TCM? Do you get no connetion error when trying to read TCM?

Ok, I will check it out in the AM, snowing here again...

So I was able to communicate individually with all modules on the powertrain CAN BUS. They all showed a "1", connection to the j533 gateway. Including the TCM. However, all of those modules and the gateway show a "0" n the MVB for communication to the engine control unit.

Was you able to do this test (troubleshoot)at your J533 and from your J533 to your TCM. If you get your ohms check out last step is the ECU is bad.
I believe the dealer is the only can do it cause have to reprogram everything plus your key fobs.

Was you able to update the ecu that you replace your battery and clear all the codes again to see what is coming up, should be about 3 things.
