S4 vs C4S
 

Just happened to get caught in the moment for this one...great moment indeed.

Clicking along on my way to work when i noticed a 997 sticking on my tail...we both end up side by side at the next light...no one ahead.

As expected, each kick it off the line...i rip through 2nd and then 3rd with my heart just pounding. I hear him just givin' er but see nothing out of my periphery.

I finally come to reality and look down...going 120km/hr and back right off...at which time buddy finally flies ahead after being a 1/2 car length behind the whole time.

I was very surprised to see it was a C4S. He was surprised too.

I've spent a fair amount of time behind the wheel of a 997 C4S - I can tell you he wasn't trying if you couldn't see him in your periphery. That car is faster than ours.

Hey dude...Im not debating the aptitude of a C4S in the right hands. This account is just a couple of wanna-be amatuers having fun.

It was definitely a rush to hang with one of my favourite cars.

Verdict: "Porsche 997 Carrera 4S is a bit faster."


However, that is based on the stock perf numbers. Here is the one track they have both run on:

Autozeitung test track
Porsche - 1:43.5
Audi - 1:41.8


Opps, looks like an underrated car :)

I don't think the C4S is faster than an B8 S4, at least not noticeably.

I get to drive my mother in law's C4S all the time. Butt dyno says S4 is faster with the abundance of low end torque that the C4S just does not have. At high RPMs, the C4S is a rocket. Her's is a rag top so there is going to be some added weight over the base C4S specs reported above.

The C4S is 385 HP, 3,300 lbs, 0-60 4.3 s (Porsche's number for the PDK). It's faster.

Let's just chalk it up to driver(s) inexperience or the Porsche driver not really giving it the beans or a combination of both.

I can tell you that I used to regularly beat my buddy who drove a 996 twin turbo and I drove a 996 C2 simply because he didn't know how to drive. I never once thought my car was fast than a 911 Turbo.

That being said, I can tell you that my S4 IS faster than my Cayman-S. ;)

Based on the rims he was sporting...it was probably at 2006 or 2007.

I think those have 355 HP with very comparable performance numbers.

Not sure why we are debating which car is "faster" based on best numbers put out with professional drivers making several trial and error runs. I hardly think these little street runs represent the true potential of any car.

I sure as hell didn't dump the clutch at 4000 rpm, he didn't either. I know i clipped through the gears cleanly...have no idea what the hell he was doing or could do.

Bottom line..."sounded" like he was trying but despite his best efforts wasn't going to overtake me until I let off at 120km/hr.

My S4 experience is like many...giving lots of "faster" cars something to remember.

355hp or 385hp... we all know the S4 is somewhere around 380hp as well.. so now you have weight as the major factor.

If they weren't in the right gear, shifted early, shifted late.. etc etc... it's not like you're going to see one car blow past the other one. I'd say pretty damn close no matter what. It would be very hard to run down either car if the other person had the jump.
