if i'm running low on oil, is it okay to top off with different viscosity oil?

i haven't had an oil change yet ever since i got my car(less than 10,000 miles); therefore my car still has the factory oil in it. since i have a bottle of mobil one in my garage, would it be okay to put that in? no problems or anything? TIA...

you can put different grades of synthetic together but not non-synthetic and synthetic.

So the question remains, what type of oil is used in a new Audi S4

NASA racer 08-22-2002 03:29 PM

new as in V8 or as in 2.7t?

last time I checked I thought the 2.7t wanted 0-30...my wife's A4 asks for 5-40 but good luck finding THAT and AFAIK it's not synthetic.

Despite ALL the stuff in the Porsche manual, my car is ONLY supposed to use 0-40 synthetic.

You need a freaking scorecard to keep up with this stuff.

2.7T, does anyone really know what kind of oil ships in the car?

That's not true

My tech told me 15w50

or something close to that. he didn't remember exactly, but it was definitely thicker than what the manual recommends.

On a repair he was doing on a "new" S4 (still in the break-in) period, the repair manual said that regular oil was not to be used and to order a "special break-in oil." When the oil arrived, it was 15w50 weight.

well not CAN'T but SHOULDN'T...

from Mobile directly:

Mobil 1 with SuperSyn is fully compatible with conventional motor oils, semi-synthetic motor oils and other synthetic motor oils should it be necessary to mix them. But the superior performance of Mobil 1 with SuperSyn will be reduced by diluting it.

NASA racer 08-22-2002 03:53 PM

that's highly unlikely...

15WXX is generally recommended ONLY for climates which the ambient temperature is generally higher than 50 degrees F.

There's no way Audi is building cars at the factory and putting a factory fill that's recommended for more than 50 degrees F.

Yeah, but if you're stuck in BFE with limited options

would you run a quart low, or taint your synth and change it as soon as possible?

Or not check your oil and wait for Porsche to give you a new motor? j/k
