Is the most recent gen RX-7 faster than a stock S4? Performance #s on RX-7?

Justin T 06-26-2001 11:53 AM

If memory serves me right, yep. I thought the 0-60 was low 5s. Quite fast stock.

lionsfan54 06-26-2001 12:01 PM

Oh yeah...

...some tests pegged 0-60 sub 5 sec. It is a very lightweight car too.

Too bad Mazda was too lame to keep selling it here. Now they try to pawn of crap like that MP3 car on us as a "performance" car.

Stepping off soap box now...

The RX7 is quite a bit quicked than the S4. I own both a 93rx7 R1 and a 2001 S4. They both have approx. same stock horsepower but rx7 is much lighter than the Audi.

Zoom. Zoom. Zoom. :) BTW, I really hate those f'ing commercials. More...

A car company whose best sports car is the frickin' Miata has a lot of balls to use this as a marketing ploy.

Even if you have to swap the engine every 40-50K, give me back the RX-7!

It is until one of the apex seals blow or one of the rotor housings warp!

adp 06-26-2001 12:10 PM

As a former 3rd gen owner... BIG time is the answer,,,

But the reliability and turbo issues made some cars a mess..

By the numbers - HP a little more thatn the stock S4, weight about 800 lbs less!

The sequential turbos gave an amazing amount of boost, and minor mods gave 300+ hp in a flash..

Want to beat one at a traffic light.. pray for rain (they are a mess in the wet) or hope a vacuum hose falls off :)

NickS 06-26-2001 12:15 PM

If they still made it, I would have one instead of my S4!

Gunny to you maggot! 06-26-2001 12:19 PM

I have beaten a stock RX7 twin turbo.

Perhaps it was the diffrence in driver experence, but then again thats his problem!

well..the RX-8 is coming soon...and a new RX-7 is rumored to being developed on the same or similar platform. Personally, i hope they build the 626 MPS and bring it here.

Justin T 06-26-2001 12:23 PM

Yeah but 6 years of no Mazda sports car and we get zoom, zoom, zoom as an ad campaign. Puhleeze!

Justin T 06-26-2001 12:25 PM

You are not stock, yes? Otherwise, that guy really sucked or maybe it was auto RX-7.

adp 06-26-2001 12:29 PM

Absolutely possible...

Many of the folsk who bought those cars were afraid of them.. unlike the S4, you can't just plant your right foot on the floor and go through the gears.. the car is light and has no traction control or electronics of that type.

lionsfan54 06-26-2001 12:30 PM

I hear that!

They quite making the RX-7 about two years before I could afford one.

I've been hearing about a "new" RX-7 for years now. And still nothing concrete.

The sad thing is that you can buy a brand new 2001 3rd gen in Japan for about $33k (correcting for currency). But because of our frickin' gov't passing OBDII regs they can't sell it here.

Das Fez 06-26-2001 12:32 PM

4.7 seconds on the RX7. The RX8 will be much slower, 6.5 at best, but also cheaper.

BiturboBoy_V2.0_S3-- 06-26-2001 12:37 PM

true true

Gunny to you maggot! 06-26-2001 12:37 PM

I was then. Stock I ran consistant 13.8s @ 95 mph

x-ricer 06-26-2001 12:41 PM

as a previous owner as well.....i would say

the rx-7 is and can be MUCH faster than an S4, no matter what is done to the audi (in most cases) ....but it is an entirely different car....not apples to apples....

Justin T 06-26-2001 12:47 PM

A nice 95 Montego Blue on Tan would be pretty sweet...
