Opinions please on Pilot Sport A/S tires.

Mine are only 150 miles old ...
 

... but I guess I can give you some of my opinion so far.

Dry Pavement:
The seem to be handling better then the stock Potenza's I had. The Pilot Sport A/S are a bit louder on the road, but mostly at high speeds, 50+. I previously had the Pilot Alpins (Winter tires) and these did not have as well handling on the dry pavement, and they were considerably louder.

Wet Pavement:
Definitely better then both Potenza's or Pilot Alpins. The Pilot Sport A/S being slightly lower profile (40 vs 45) then the Pilot Alpins may have something to do with that.

Snow:
I have not been able to test the Pilot Sport A/S on deep snow yet.
But today, when I arrived at work, the parking lot had snow in it from the previous night. It was not really that soft, and it was at most 1/2 inch of it down.
Tried taking off fast as well as hard brake, and the did not slide at all.
The snow was clearly somewhat iced up, since I almost fell on the ground, but the car handled just great.

Iced Pavement:
I have not had the chance to test this.
Yesterday, when I was arriving back from indoor soccer, because it had rained during the day, at night I think I hit a few icy spots, but nothing major. Car did not seem to mind, but I did not do any testing as far as braking or anything.

This is all I have so far, since I've only had them on for about 150 miles over 96 hours worth of time, not all of it driving.

Think they are worth it...Are they you're only tires year round?

I have ordered a set of the Pilot A/S for my '01 S4 (and it is taking 2 weeks to get them in)...

Since I am putting them on my stock S4 wheels (225/45/17) I ordered the Pilots A/S in 225/45/17 BUT you mentioned that your A/S tires were 40s?!?

Do you have different wheels OR is there a reason you would suggest going with the 40s vs. the standard 45s?

Curious and look forward to your opinion (or anyone else's).

The reason I chose the 235/40 is because I have 18" wheels.
I believe the stock Potenza's on the Avus 17" were 225/40. I like the low profile of the 40s, since the 45s seem to have too high of a sidewall.
When I got the Winter tires for the Avus, I did get them on 225/45.

But because I plan to use the A/S all year round, I figured I wanted the performance look and stability of 40s.

I had read a review on them on a magazine about 1-2 months back, and the reviews were great on dry and wet pavement.
I figured since they are good, I'll give it a try.
I am sure they could hold their own with regular Pilot Sport tires if I were to track them. But I won't do that!

Well, maybe you and I will be the "test bed" for these tires on the S4. I can't wait to get them (especially since it started snowing here in NJ this week and I am still on my Pilot SX tires).

I figured (and am hoping) that for the $, this tire will give me similar performance to my Pilot SX as well as the light snow and all-season "support" I need out here. Not enough time to keep switchin tires...
