What is a good jack(Not too large or expensive) and jack stands to buy?
I'm painting calipers and installing suspension to name a few of the things I need them for. Thanks for the help.

This one is pretty nice...

Sears hydraulic jack and jack stand package. It gets the job done for the typical home user.
|
I looked on their site...They had 3 separate packages, would u go with the black or blue pkg?
|
Check the sunday newspaper for the sears ad, they always have one on sale.
There is a particular one that will fit lowered cars, not sure of the model number. They usually price a jack and 2 or 4 stands at $100 or less.
|
I got that one, haven't used it yet - but I think it will do the job.
|
Doesn't fit under lowered cars.
|
Harbor Freight, it is $170. The cheapest decent jack you will find IMO. Jackstands from anywhere
will work.

Woah, he must be reeeaaal low then. Wood planks will help if he wants to save $$$$. =)

Re: What is a good jack(Not too large or expensive) and jack stands to buy?
Oak Harbor Freight has an aluminum one (75lb) that is just right. Priced at $179. I ditched my Sears unit.
|
Big difference b/t the two? I'd rather save the 100 unless it is big...
also was there any clearence issues with the sears?
|
2 and a half ton jack stands are fine correct?
|
Should be fine. I got 3 ton just because - can't even remember, but I don't think they had anything
rated to less. Just make sure the minimum height on the jackstand in question isn't super high. It just gives you more flexibility IMO, especially for stuff like brakes where you don't need a ton of height.
-st |
Yes. 5000lb jack is fine.
|
Actually, the cheap 2ton jacks at HF are not safe. I've seen them break....not a good site IMO.
I think that's why they're dirt cheap. Hence the saying, you get what you pay for.
|
Thanks to everyone for the help...whats a good height range?
|
Standard height should be good enough. As long as you can get the jack stand up a couple
of notches, you should be good. I'd also get tire chauks, unless you're just gonna carry something to brace a wheel with. It's also good for the track days too...beats having to go find a rock.
|
BS, I've been using mine for almost a year without incident.
|
my sears jack didn't fit under when the car was at 25" front and rear
but now at 25.25" it does. It's not so hard to just pull up on the fender and tuck the jack under there anyway.
|
Its going up on all 4 stands for the next two projects(suspension and brake painting)
|
You've seen this thing break?
I find that difficult to believe since so many people have them and not one person has reported problems with it.

Don't know them really. I was just stating that a 2.5 ton jackstand should be adequate.
I was assuming it wasn't going to break : )

Sears seem good quality for money...Whats ur opinion? Do you use their jack stands too?
|
yep...I got my stuff around christmas, so there wasn't much to choose from
my jack is a bit beefy. I'd like a smaller one, but mine fits under the car and works well. I have the 3 ton jack stands. There are some better deals on harborfrieght for stands and jacks. Even Autozone has some nice stuff too. Saw a nice jack there last time I was in AZ.

Here's a nice set of stands -
