Advantages/disadvantages 5spd vs 6spd
I'm looking at two TT's. One is a 2000 with the 5spd and the other is a 2001 with the 6spd. Both are Quattro.
The 5spd car I know so far has MTM exhaust, but I do not know if there are any other mods done to it. The 6spd is stock as far as I know. Part of me wants a 6spd, just because it's a 6spd. But is there any advantage to having it over the 5spd? I plan on modifyiing either car with FMICs, 3" downpipes, tunes, larger turbos. Would the 5spd be lighter and a little stronger? Would it being a 180hp engine be a disadvantage? Oh and the price difference is about $4k more for the 2001 than the 2000. |

Well------- Yes, a 45 hp disadvantage. Seriously, The 225 has more potiential too due to forged internals. Some feel that the 6 speed trans has been more reliable, but that may just be opinion, as I think they are very similar. Whichever you get , just be pickey and get a good one that has been cared for.

i prefer the 180Q my self, as for the tranny, they are 100% the same the ratio's change. the case, bearings, and such are all the same. both can take the same abuse. i swap back and forth on my car from 5spd to 6spd from time to time as i cant make up my mind what ratio works best for me and i happen to have extra TT parts to toy around with.
if ur just giong to drive it get a 225, if ur going to build it up get a 180..... why i say this? well cuz u will replace the few parts that make the 225 better if u go for big hp no mater what and your insurance will be lower if u have a "180" on the books ahah....... |
The 6sp has more power wich = more fun from the get go, like the other guys said before more potential and the advantage of a stronger engine due to the forged internals.

Thanks for the info so far.
It sounds like if I want to build a monster, it really doesn't matter as I'd have to replace the same things on either engine. And if I wanted to do a mild tune or leave it stock the 225hp is the better place to start. As for the tranny, it seems that is a wash and whichever you get will handle the power. |

Both engines have forged internals, in fact the 180 MAY have better built wrist pins (20mm in the 180 vs 19mm in AWP 225 motors). Also the 180 has a higher compression ratio meaning you have the potential to get more power from the same set up. If you are going to build it up, get the 180 and save the $4k for the project fund.
