APR or FORGE front mount? For 180 fwd?

I have heard they are both great, but figured I would ask the group.. I was told with the FORGE I have to cut around the bumper and the APR was direct fit.. any pros/cons other than the cutting to either one of these? Any info greatly appreciated.

GorTT 07-30-2007 08:19 AM

the APR is less effort; doesn't require a manifold swap >

but I like the forge, and the effort isn't necessarily a bad thing.

SunSeTT - Lab RaTT 07-30-2007 08:24 AM

The guy thats putting it on said he was going to charge me

300.00 either way (meaning apr or forge) so figured since forge is local I would go with them, plus im getting a great deal! I just didnt want to tear the car up too much...

Other than the manifold swap, and pros/cons? I heard guys saying they had problems with the Forge - saying they had the temp's all over the place, and with the APR it was steady and less hoses etc..

GorTT 07-30-2007 08:33 AM

wrong, on the problems - never had any at all - great setup, but >

your mechanic's way off if he say's he'll do both for the same price - swapping the mainfold is at least another one to two hours and by the way, I'd get the evoheatshield phenolic gasket if the manifold's coming off (extra $100 or so, but no additional labor), helps optimize the FMIC effort.

SunSeTT - Lab RaTT 07-30-2007 08:40 AM

The mechanic is a buddy of mine..

He just laid out a flat price to do them, I also have to have the turbo replaced while im there (sigh.)

And I just noticed you had a K04 on yours! (cries.) LOL I want to put one on mine but can't find any nor what kind to put on the car as a direct replacment.

So this evo heatshild thing... way better than the gasket that comes with the forge one?

RoberTT-WWCD 07-30-2007 08:56 AM

I have the APR. Easy bolt up with no mani exchange...>>

Uses the top down approch. I removed the alians because of my setup. But I hear you don't need to.

Also, it's a little cheaper than the forge and I think for the 180, it's a better design.

tylor 07-30-2007 09:09 AM

I'm making the tCarbon 180 Kit available at the end of the week...

Here are a few pictures... it keeps the OEM intake manifold, uses the cross-tube (used in the 225 SMIC set-up), and includes DV relocation:

PS- Did you check Vortex for the K04? I saw one available just a few days ago.

GorTT 07-30-2007 09:18 AM

Yes, way better on the gasket; I got my turbo at Kinetic Motorsport >

It's a K04-01, great upgrade for a fwd given the weight difference from quattros. I got it separately, then had APR upgrade my existing programming for it - and there might be a charge, like $200 (that's 'sort of' per their site - and I kept asking the local dealer who did it to pay them something, but they kept saying no, no charge, so I took it and thanked them very much). The turbo will set you back in the range of 800, irc.

http://www.kineticmotorsport.com/products/BorgWarner_K04_001-36-85.html</a

Interesting piece >

the nipple looks short for the dv relo, but I'm curious nevertheless - I want to integrate an SFS dv relo hose with my forge 180 fmic. Currently running the forge dvrelo kit, but want to swap to the sfs or a forge 225 dv relo just to clean things up a bit; I have a standard 225 MAP pipe I thought I'd use to pull it off, but might be able to make what I see work a bit better if you'd consider selling me just that part. If email's ok, let me shoot you one tonight when I have access to all my pics and facts.

Scenic Driver 07-30-2007 10:01 AM

I had to cut the alien mounting bracket on mine

roadyTT 07-30-2007 10:15 AM

TCarbon not withstanding, the APR is significantly cheaper than the Forge kit

Astronut 07-30-2007 10:22 AM

Yeah where is mine BTW?

Sent you an email. Was hoping to get this installed before TT East.

RoberTT-WWCD 07-30-2007 10:28 AM

I did mine as well. However, after shifting the pip and hose...>>

I think that there is just enough room for the aliens. Course, I only used mine 3 times in 5 years...2 to show off.

SunSeTT - Lab RaTT 07-30-2007 10:35 AM

Wow! A wealth of info! :) THANKS VERY MUCH!

I am open for more, I wish the hell I could find a K04 for cheap - that wont happen I guess. I got the k03 with 18k for 150.00 ;)

And thank you for the info on the gasket, ill check that out too! :)

Hmmm....

I dont want to lose my aliens ARG!

tylor 07-30-2007 10:36 AM

Nipple is short but deep enough due to the hose thickness...

I'll post some engine bay pictures later -- it's very stealth. So you are currently running the Forge 180 Kit with the DV relo kit where you have to cut the tubing up, and are looking to change so that you have a more integrated install, less clamps, ect?

I don't think this hose would work out for you. The tubing that runs to the throttle body is different on the 180 than the 225 (I initially thought they were the same as well). I'm not sure what SFS charges, but I just gave the go ahead for a 225 DV relocation hose and I'm going to let those go for $99-$125, and both upper intercooler hoses (with DV relo) for $199.

If the right intercooler hose is the same on the 180 as the 225 for your Forge, your best bet would be doing either my or SFS DV relocation and the MAP sensor pipe -- but I think that adds up to just as many clamps, haha. If you're that crazy over the idea I could mold your current tubing with the DV relocation integrated into it.

tylor 07-30-2007 10:38 AM

What time? I'm sorry I haven't gotten to it yet! Working my way down...

I am just waiting on the 1" hose and vacuum lines. It should go out Wednesday -- I'm sorry!

Astronut 07-30-2007 10:40 AM

11:28 am Eastern Time but that answers my ? thx

tylor 07-30-2007 10:43 AM

Going to pull it up now, too.

SunSeTT - Lab RaTT 07-30-2007 10:48 AM

email sent tylor...

Can you call me? :);

andrew.tt 07-30-2007 11:08 AM

tcarbon or apr >>

i have the forge and it is an effort to install. if i could go back again, i would compare the two i mentioned for price/efficiency and pick one.

Forge 07-30-2007 11:17 AM

Forge is the only true engineered soloution

no trimming required , and a great upgrade , not the cheapest but still good

SunSeTT - Lab RaTT 07-30-2007 11:42 AM

LOL Plus you guys are local and I love FORGE!

I just want to weigh out the pros and cons, because some folks told me I had to cut my bumper which I am NOT willing to do. I dont want to lose the aliens or shred my bumper up

Qu!cksilva 07-30-2007 02:31 PM

I have the Forge on my Stage 3 TT

was one of the beta's for it....fit and finish is great.
Keeps the Roach nice and cool and boosting for long time baby!

Tylor (long & detailed....) >

Tylor -

1. I *am* currently running the Forge 180 Kit (225 manifold) with their DV relo kit where you have to cut the tubing up, and am looking to change that with the SFS 225 DV relo hose (or could be done with a Forge - who's just come out with one also - but I already have the SFS) just purely to clean up the install.

2. "I don't think this hose would work out for you. The tubing that runs to the throttle body is different on the 180 than the 225 (I initially thought they were the same as well)"

Yes - the Forge 180 kit upper hose *is* different from the 225, but the lower drivers-side section coming off the intercooler is the same for both Forge kits (180 and 225) the difference is that at that point the 225 kit ties into the MAP pipe and then the map pipe connects to the throttle body with another hose whereas the 180 kit just uses one hose which connects directly to the lower hose, and which turns up right at the lower hose connection (rather than running horizontally where the 225 map pipe is) and which integrates the MAP sensor in a vertical section directly above that connection.

*However*, since the SFS/Forge 225 DV relo is designed to tie to the MAP pipe (with the SFS DV relo hose in 225 configuration, I need the pipe - which I have - or a section like yours designed to run horizontally with the map sensor in it, thus my question.

Anyway, your section there replaces the map pipe for me and I just like the looks of it (and no fewer - or more - clamps required than the map pipe solution); I'm just wondering if I'd have enough length to cut off your DV relo nipple or if I'd need to plug it (which I find inelegant and would prefer not to do) - alternatively, is it possible for you to have one made for me without the DV relo nipple?

So - that's what what I'm talking about; purely me being compulsive... ;-)

andrew.tt 07-31-2007 01:18 AM

true -- but the forge install on the 180 requires significant reworking >>

of the brake booster piping, injector wiring, manifold position and various vacuum lines. the APR and tcarbon are most likely a lot easier to install. plus you will need to modify some of your engine covers if you want to keep them.

SunSeTT - Lab RaTT 07-31-2007 04:14 AM

gotcha..

Affirmative... I guess this is why the mechanic said it's a royal pain in the a$$! :)

We shall see, it's baby steps... have to get the turbo fixed this week, and inlet hose - when it comes out of the shop. Then the following weekend the intercooler, and valve cover gaskets etc.. heh..

From the sounds of it it will be worth it though!

tylor 07-31-2007 11:54 AM

Yes that's what I thought though I wasn't clear enough...

When I said that the 180 and 225 tubing going to the throttle body wasn't the same, I meant OEM. My upper tube is similar to the OEM 180 but I don't think that will be enough length for you -- as you know, the 180's MAP sensor is on the intercooler -- I didn't replace a MAP pipe I just relocated the flange.

Anyway, shoot me an e-mail with the length of the tube you want to replace and I'll see how close it is to mine but we should stop cluttering this guy's thread. :-)

GorTT 07-31-2007 01:22 PM

well, whats a little clutter among threads! I'll shoot you a note and a pic later tonight/thx.

Astronut 08-01-2007 10:02 AM

FYI is someone's selling a used APR one on the Vortex

Good price and he's almost local (Ft. Myers)

click

SunSeTT - Lab RaTT 08-01-2007 11:40 AM

I saw that - and was considering it - if I had to cut my bumper

However I was assured by a few guys here and Angel at forge that I wouldn't have to cut anything on my car. The APR is a great price too, I talked to the guy - whomever gets it is getting a great price!

I am going to go with the forge, again they are very local and their support is great!
