NSU TT

Anyone else familiar with NSU? They were a bicycle, motorcycle and auto manufacturer that spearheaded the rotary engine and were serious competitors in the motorcycle business. They also built the original TT and TTS autos that inspired the name of the current Audi. The NSU TT is totally opposite the Audi TT, small boxy and a rear mounted motor. I'm kind of fascinated with these cars. If there is an Audi equivalent to the 2002, this might be it.

Yeah, I've read a little bit about them...

One of the Audi books I own has some decent pictures of the NSU Prinz 1000 & 1200 TT's and TTS.

Styling wise the NSU TT does look like a BMW 2002.

Have you ever seen the NSU Ro80? Another pretty cool car NSU built. It had a 115HP Wankel rotary engine in it. Car of the year in 1967...

Ro80 was Cool Too

Yes, technologically, the car was pretty significant. I thought it was a little goofy looking, but perhaps it was ahead of its time.

From what I understand, NSU had a factory performance program for the TTs, and TTSs, and I actually am working on an article about one particular driver who campaigned it to success against the Mini Cooper here in the USA.

Re: pics?

Huh, I just went through VWvortex and Audiworld and couldn't find our Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix articles. I have some pics, I'll try to get them up soon.

I sure remember the TT, almost bought one in '71, but then

fell in love with the Ro 80 and Audi 100 Coupe, both of which I could not afford at the time, and ended up buying a VW K 70, that was based on the Ro 80, but had a bored and stroked version (1604cc) of the 1200cc TT engine.
Out of the bunch, the Ro 80 was at least 15-20 years ahead of its time in terms of styling. As for the Audi Coupe, it was at the time refered to as the poor mans Ferrari. I would be quite tempted to purchase a Coupe, or a Ro 80 if a good one came along.
My dad's cousin had a NSU spyder in the mid sixties that was a blast at the time, but quite temperamental.

Re: pics?

As soon as I learn how to post photos I will try and post a photo from May 31, 1970 at Riverside Raceway, Riverside, CA. It shows Bill Allen, NSU-TTS, 1969 National Champion, D-Sedan, leading Ed Dempsy, Fiat-Abarth Berlina Corsa 1000, 1968 National Champion, D-Sedan. Also I have a more recent pic of my "new" '67 NSU-TTS racing in So. Calif.
