I've never owned a boring car in my life, but I'll never again have a more fascinating car than my old 1970 NSU 1000TT. Both of them in fact, which happily motored me through my post-college decade from '75 to '85. Those nutty little cars weren't fast, but they were quick. The steering was incredible, so fast and direct and kart-like. The geometry of the front suspension (double A-arms!) tipped the inside front wheel at a sharp angle, so the car literally leaned into turns like a cycle. The steering had very strong self-centering. The skinny Michelin X tires lasted 40,000 miles. Amazingly, over 120,000 miles, neither car ever needed an alignment. And that was just the steering. I could go on about the engine, or.. well, there wasn't much there to talk about besides the engine and the steering. I had an AM radio, but the rumble of the Abarth four-pipe in back set the tune.
Of course, the logistics of maintaining such an obscure car were grueling. The search for parts ranged from difficult to desperate. I saw figures that less than 1000 NSU's of every model were sold in the US. If you ever have a chance, BUY THIS CAR!
