DVD Nav Installation on 4.2 06 Sline - Kufatec GmBH

Hello all, I recently completed a DVD Navigation Retrofit Kit install from Kufatec on my 4.2 06 S-line. Here are some of my observations and comments.

My installation took about 3 hrs. and was "not" the walk in the park some would have you believe. You have to be extra careful while removing the wheel well panels etc. so as not damage them. (Especially the clips that hold the panels to the frame of the car which can separate easily from the panels if you're not careful)

After some research, I found that the Shark antenna that comes with the car does have the GPS antenna module installed but on mine there were no wires coming from GPS portion of the Shark antenna to use.

I used the after market GPS antenna which comes with the kit from Kufatec and attached it to the underside of the back window in the blacked out area next to the collision avoidance light so it was not visible from the outside.
You will have to remove the panel above the back seat to access this area. The panel is just clipped on and was easy to remove and replace once the GPS antenna was installed. (Industrial strength Velcro works great for attaching the GPS antenna to the window)

The wire from the GPS antenna does have to be run down the left side of the car through the channel next to the back window to the equipment rack which holds the Bose Amp/K-Box/DVD/GPS Nav unit and the XM or Sirius radio module. (You will need a 10 mm wrench to remove most of the nuts holding the equipment rack and E-Box fuse panel)

The new "Power wire" from the DVD/GPS Nav unit runs to the E-Box on the right hand side of the trunk. It's a single red/brown wire that plugs into the 2nd fuse block up 7 places from the bottom of the connector.
The main battery cable also has to be "disconnected" as well so as not to accidentally short out the entire electrical system while adding in this additional wire.
When power is restored you will have to reset your clock/date etc. on the main MMI interface.

The good news is the unit fired right up and programmed itself in about 10 minutes and the system was up and running. I would suggest before attempting to do this you study the detailed fitting instructions carefully, especially the installation of the fiber optic loop between the K-Box and the new DVD nav unit. It's not difficult but a little tricky. You have to make sure you get your fiber optic "input" and "outputs" correct or your not going to have a working MMI when you power the system back up.

All and all the installation is straight forward if you take your time and double check your work.
After completing the installation I can see why the dealers say it takes from 3-6 hours to complete.

Good Luck and happy travels using your new DVD nav system.

BTW - I'm using the NAVTEQ North America/Canada Version 7 DVD and it works very well.
Road tests have revealed GPS accuracy to be approximately 1 meter.

Re: DVD Nav Installation 06 Sline - Kufatec GmBH

Can you figure a way to play real DVD movies on the display of the DVD nav system? I have a 2005 A6 (3.2) with factory installed DVD nav system.

Congrats, he beat me to the punch

Good job,
Did Kufatec get you your parts in a timly manor? I was planning on doing a DIY but I am having computer/camera problems. I found another location you can put the antenna is directly under the rear shelf (there are holes in the metal there). All you need to place it there is some double sided foam tape and it works wonderfully. I have received up to 9 satellites at a time (only 3 are required). Also, by doing this, you do not have to remove all of the trim panels because you don't have to run a wire up the pillar.
I would would say that the hardest part is removing the trim panels but after I figured out where to put the antenna, that wasn't even needed. Also, understanding the directions was difficult. I was completely confused about the fiber optic splicing until I realized that on the cable they send, there is an extra cable that you don't use.
Oh, and for anyone who was tracking my last post, I have not yet had my nav stop working a (knock on wood).

A few questions to you guys

A few Questions to both of you. The 5 Amp fuse that was in the package looks flimsy and the 2 metal pins actually move around. Did u use that or did you get a plastic one?

The red/brown power lead that comes out of onw of the harnesses ends in a little metal
clip. What is that supposed to clip onto?

Antenna under the rear shelf? Do you mean from the trunk side through the underside of the shelf? I did something similar in my Benz but the underside of the shelf was full of foam. What I did was to pull down the back seat, run the wire along the edge (stuffed it between the trim pieces ) and behind the trim on the c-pillar all the way to the roof and stuck the antena behind the black part on the top of the rear window. Worked great.

I am going to take couple of pics of all the parts tomorrow and maybe you guys can chime in about where they go :)

Thanks
