Wouldn't surprise me even a little bit. I've speculated exactly that in the past. If it works for diesels, there's no reason it can't be applied to gasoline engines, too. I've often wondered how our 2.0T consistently exceeds EPA fuel economy ratings, and I rarely see an Audi that doesn't have black-stained exhaust tips.

I never knew black stained exhaust tips were common with Audi's. Is this also seen with the sedans (A3, A4 , A6, etc) or just the SUVs (Q3, Q5 and Q7).
Thanks

Black exhaust tips are common with all DI engines. It's not just an Audi thing.

True, and the exhaust tips on my Kia (GDI engine) are every bit as black as the ones on the Audi.

Yep, when I had a 2012 Optima the exhaust tips were just as black or blacker.

The Ford Ecoboost[s] are notorious for this. Run extra rich on cold start to get those cats heated up quicker. Down side is black soot on the tailpipes and worse [with the Ecoboost anyway] was the primary cats filling up with soot prematurely causing mileage to go to crap, power reduction, and cats only lasting just a little longer than the 36K warranty. I had to sell my 2011 F150 back to the dealer it had so many problems related to the Ecoboost. Tended to call it Eco-busted. Ford legal actually dared me to lemon law it. Said, it would get tied up in litigation and I would never get a settlement. How's that for cooperation? Just lucky I had a reasonable dealer. If I ever have to rely on my Audi dealer for anything dieselgate related . . . I'm in trouble. And, that is truly a shame!

I thought issue was also with the TFSI engines. Wasn't the previous post with the black exhausts for 3.0T TFSI Q5?

It's not fun, but it's possible. A little less than a year's build up from my Q5 3.0T.

Are these pics for a TDI or TFSI Q5?

TFSI is a DI engine. DI = direct injection.

Thanks. For my clarification, isn't this thread implying the software issue also applies to the gasoline engine? I'm interested in picking up a gasoline Q5, no interest in the diesel version.
