Ok so I figured out the solution.

The 2013 Q5s need the Data-only GSM cards. The Talk/Text/Internet GSM cards do not work. Neither do the LTE cards. I managed to find a Data-Only GSM card for $35 on Amazon... pricier than the other options, but I think google earth is worth it.

The setup process for the Data-Only GSM cards is below:
- APN: freedompop.foggmobile.com
- Username: FreedomPop
- Password: Blank. Either leave it as it is or enter the password editor and press space once.
- Return to previous menu
- Enable Data Roaming

This worked today for my vehicle.

Glad it worked. By the way, did FreedomPop assign you a phone number for your SIM? I used a standard FreedomPop 3-in-1 SIM with no problem.

Mine is the Data-only SIM so no, I don't believe they've assigned me a number yet.

I'm still working with freedompop on trying to figure out why my SIM is not being displayed on my account overview... so this is still pending... but at least its showing Google Earth in my car.

I got a phone number with mine, though I haven’t ever tried to use it.

That is because it is a SIM card for phone, text and data. Any GSM telephone SIM card should work. You can make calls, but depending on your plan, you pay a la carte or with an allowance.

Hey all lookie here first post!
Purchased a 2015 Q5 3.0T CPO yesterday. I'm struggling to absorb all the data!!!
It has tech (nav) so I think I have MIB. I see the SIM card slot and all the menu options and would like to try the freedompop route.

Does anyone know if an LTE card will work or will it be just a 3G?
Here is the MMI info screen report:
Sotware version:
HN+_US_AU36_PO814
Navigation database version:
8R0060884CJ NAR 6.11.2

Thanks a lot everyone. Hope to be able to contribute one day!

If you buy the 3 in 1 SIM card from Freedompop it will work at 3G speeds.

Found out that when you use google maps or any devices WIFI'ed in the car you'll suck up the data so it is NOT so cheap unless you don't use it, then it is cheap. BEWARE what's WIFI'ed.

Derp, after using FreedomPop for a year solely for Google Earth maps I finally got a myAudi.com account. Lo and behold, I can indeed use this to drop destinations to my navigation system over the internet. I was sure I needed Audi Connect for that.

Is that with a US region car? As far as I can tell the only thing I got by enabling my external SIM was the ability to hotspot, and if I try to do anything but download a map update I get a 404 (not found).

Google Maps or Earth? I thought Earth only worked with the internal SIM/Audi Connect sub. Or is this perhaps a weird end around if you use the same cellular network as the built in, it'll magically let you do all these things?
