Default What are the early signs of turbo failure ...

he reluctantly asks... and is it possible turbo's can begin to fail, or fail without throwing a fault code or CEL?

yes. Dentist drill sound, slow car...stuff like that.

Default Had a quick little boost leak sound (psssst) ...

for just a split second about a week or so ago. Immediately thereafter, the car ran like crap - felt like it was running on 3 cylinders, bad gas, or the like. That went away the next morning. About 5 or 6 days later, I now have a high pitched dentist drill sound on acceleration, particularly evident when cold. When I accelerate, I hear the sound and if I let off the gas the sound stops but there is a very, very slight metallic sound for a split second. Sounds to me like they are going.... but the performance does not yet seem to be impacted (though I am not inclined to push it hard, either)

Default sounds like classic TBB or F-hose failure...

plenty of hoses that get a tear or hole and that can CAUSE a problem over time...get all the hoses checked CAREFULLY.

Default Tim, I'll talk to you this week... had very similar sounds recently...

Tech actually brought it up during the post-svc test drive, I actually hadn't thought too much about it, so never even raised any concerns about the spool-up noise.

Maybe give me a call on my cell Monday, better to talk on the phone as need to describe it to you, and what was done... Nice 'n' quiet now, seems almost too quiet now. Almost (not really) miss the cool spool-up turbine sounds. ; )

Default Got my car back yesterday with new turbos @ 35K...

I had the siren sound from early on at myabe 1000 miles or so. I've had several turbo vehicles, so the turbo whine was not entirely unexpected. However, at moderate throttle to WOT, I started getting a high pitched buzzing sound. I assume the bearings get too much play and blades start rubbing the housing as they spin. It was subtle, but I can say that my wife could hear it. I had no smoke or other "dire" indications. Also, there were no codes related to the turbo failure at the time I took the car in. The new turbos are absolutely silent.

Default My turbos went out at 38K - new turbos are dead silent also and no sandblaster sound...

from the exhaust anymore - seems like the new turbos are better? - but the dealership said that they are the same part number with no revision codes?

Well at least the car is like it should be - fast and quite with no squeeks or groans :-)
