Nice writeup!! One question: Do you really need to rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions by hand to make sure that the valves don't hit the pistons? On my engine, 1.8T AEB, getting to the crankshaft is a real PITA (requires taking bumper and radiator off). Everything else seems pretty straight forward in replacing the valve cover gasket and cam adjuster seal with this method. It seems to me that if you keep everything lined up, there shouldn't be any danger of damaging your valves.

Any comments would be appreciated!! Thanks in advance.

Default A note for the archives - Make sure you set the cams at TDC.

If you don't, you won't be able to compress the adjuster.

Thanks to this write-up and many others, I was able to successfully change my half-moon and metal gasket. My only experience was stupidly doing the valve covers a few weeks ago, which did not fix my oil leak problem.

I did not have the tool, and I was afraid of messing something up, but I got the tool, and used these and other write-ups to help get it done successfully. So far so good.

For the record, I also replaced my spider hose, and my oil cap, in hopes of preventing this problem from my driver's side and from coming again on the passenger's side any time soon.

Thanks again,

Default Cam chain tensioner/seal/tool

Help! Am doing a 2.7 cam chaintensioner gasket replacement...my tensioner tool broke...the tensioner doesn't seem to want to compress...I repaired the tool, but why would the tensioner not compress? (this is for the left cylinder bank..)

All of the directions I read mentioned to turn it slowly, and be sure to stop once the resistance increases.

The 2 main links I used:
https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho...php?p=15218855

https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho...php?p=15202978
*key quote from the above link:
"Install the VAG tool 3366, Cam Adjuster spring compressor. Do not go too quickly...just keep tightening until it is snug. You will know when you are there. (Don't over tighten as you could damage the adjuster) Notice the slack now evident in the chain!"

Well, I got resistance, but no compression. I got it down just a bit, and I've gotten the gasket out, but it seems like it doesn't want to compress...

I had the same issue, and used this method(6th gear method) with success.

Default Stops in to look around...

Don't spend much time on Audiworld these days as work seems to keep me mostly occupied. However, have to admit this is a blast from the past.

At least the post lives on even though quite a while back! My old girl is approaching 150k on the clock and still running strong.

Glad this post was a help to the community!

For the record, this is the one I used the most, with the others as references.

This line was critical to my success:
"Install the VAG tool 3366, Cam Adjuster spring compressor. Do not go to quickly...just keep tightening until it is snug. You will know when you are there. (Don't over tighten as you could damage the adjuster) Notice the slack now evident in the chain!"

Along with the picture that showed the 4(not 3) bolts to undo the tensioner. I could not believe the 4th arrow, I thought it was a mistake, but thanks to your obvious picture, I had no problems.

The other link that really helped me get through it was this one, which talks about the 6th gear trick.

Soo, thanks again.
