Want to confirm my bad tranny diagnosis. Rebuild time? Paging Tozo...
Codes are 17116 (Gear 2: Incorrect Ratio), 17114 (Gear Ratio Monitoring Incorrect Gear Ratio), and 17117 (Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio).
Drivable but only if you feather throttle to keep it from going into Safe Mode. Can restart to clear Safe Mode.
While driving, easy to make it slip in 1, 2 and 3. No slip in 4 or 5 if you hold specific gear using tip shift, even with heavy throttle. Ditto in Safe Mode actually, which as I recall is 4th anyway. Reverse remains fine and unaffected.
Original incident was it seemed to miss a shift when accelerating after I let off gas then back on it harder. Somewhat of a clunk and maybe modest noise, but not violent or super notable the moment it occurred, and not the full on notorious Audi tranny clunk I know of before I had valve body rebuilt and traced my bad output sensor wiring issue. After the missed shift incident, it immediately started slipping for the balance of the (suburban) trip back home. Just got filter, gasket and fluid (after the holiday) and did full drain and replace, including Lubegard Red.
When I pulled the pan there were no obvious issues at all. No metal chunks or filings or anything like that. I had Eriksson rebuild valve body at 50 or 60K. Was shifting perfectly right up until the specific incident when it then flaked out. Had actually done a bunch of testing of car the prior day with bedding brakes, diagnosing motor smoke and all, including full throttle runs to highway speeds so knew tranny was in good shape immediately before; no missed shifts, roughness, slippage, clunking or other usual 5HP24 issues immediately prior to this problem. All makes me expect it is a sudden internal failure. Car has 108K miles and I am the original owner since new.
Scanning posts again and looking at the clutch logic, I'm sensing it involves clutch A or is the old torn basket stuff I see on the boards. Thought at first it might be torque converter lock up when it first happened and I got home to pull the pan and do fluid change. But now post fluid and filter service I expect it isn't the converter given I now find 4th and 5th are both solid. Soon as it drops to third though (when using D), RPM's shoot way up if I don't back off gas.
Confirming or contrary opinions? Any further diagnostics needed or is it definitive? Tranny rebuild? I assume ditto on torque converter just preventatively, though again I saw no debris in pan and am not aware of slippage (and no recent codes either before this). Did not pull valve body by the way to look up further into the tranny (where I could see before when I pulled it for the valve body rebuild some years back).
I am in SF Bay Area. Tozo, I think you are in Chicago area, and Eriksson is all the way in CT. Any decent options known in No. Cal? I can also pull tranny or have it pulled. I'm comfortable to the level of the valve body remove and replace, plus all internal engine. Just rebuilt and R&R'ed passenger cylinder head actually (stem seal issues I earlier tried to do without removing head), plus full timing belt service, so motor is now in good shape, plus new brake pads and hoses. All literally a few days before this set back. Renewed full motor power and tune, etc. could have stressed it some too. But then also worth fixing tranny up some given rest seems in good mechanical shape.
Objectively feels like it's probably no longer worth an Eriksson type ZF rebuild price now, especially if I pay to have it R&R'ed. Don't want to just go with random ebay or junked car tranny either though with unknown history, esp. with labor to pull and replace and non-bullet proof nature of the 5HP's to start. Can take car down for several weeks to get it right.
Advice appreciated. Can e mail off line too if preferred.

I have done a lot of searching and this post almost describes my exact situation. I wanted to know if there is a resolution or recommendation.
My A6 has 105K miles on it and does the same – slips in gears 1,2,3, and then goes into limp mode. One day it worked fine, and the next day – slippage. No warning. Vag-com came up with one code - 17116 (Gear 2: Incorrect Ratio). I did the filter and fluid change (with my fingers crossed) with no change. The fluid I removed was dark in color, un-clear, and did not have any metal shavings on the magnets.
As with MP4.2+6.0, I am in the SF Bay area as well. Any information, suggestions, and/or recommendation would be appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
Thanks for the quick reply. I have been traveling and have not had the opportunity to follow up. Since you are an expert, how hard is it to do this fix? I know the tranny will need to come out - but after that, how difficult is it to work on the transmission? - special tools required? The transmission was rebuilt about 4 years ago when the reverse went out - but only warranted for 2 years (just my luck).
Thanks again for your time and advice.
Paul
