How to remove C5 trunk lock from trunk lid and retain sanity?

How to remove C5 trunk lock from trunk lid and retain sanity?
I need to remove my trunk lock unit from my trunk lid to attempt a repair, but having removed the trunk lid liner, I can't see how to remove the lock unit.
Having disengaged the connector rod between the lock unit and the latch and undoing the two 10mm nuts, I thought the unit would be free to remove. It seems to be restrained by the handles though (they look like they mount from outside), but really I'm at a loss.
Need a heads up please on how to do this? Any DIY's or gold advice? I figure I'm missing something simple, but what?

The best way "I think" you can do this is to first remove the release handle from inside the trunk by disengaging the two locating hooks to pull the handle out, then remove the two Phillip head screws from the outside to remove the lock actuator.
The Ebahn illustration makes no mention of removing the rear plate housing and is based on North American models.
