Clunk on startup 3.0T

Default Clunk on startup 3.0T

Hi guys,

I've had my 15 3.0T for 1.5 months and loving it. Went from 2.0t to 3.0 and will never look back.

One issue though. Sometimes when I start up the car it clunks a bit as if the transmission is hooking up or something. It's a bit disconcerting because it's a noticeable jerking action.

Maybe some loose bolts and the starter is loose or the transmission??

Anyone ever experience this? The car functions normal but wondering if I need to have it looked at.

I can't say I have heard a clunk sound when putting transmission into reverse or drive. Is this happening when the engine idle revs are above 1k rpms? In any case if this sound is unsettling to you then have the dealer check out.

It's at startup still in park. As soon as engine roars to life it clunks.

Well it's definitely a jarring effect. Don't think its the injectors. I think it's the starter or tranny.

My 2013 just started doing that after I have it for 2 years. It will only clunk when the car has fully warmed up when you start it up. Never in the morning.

Another possibility is that if you turn the car off and the steering wheel locks with the wheels at a slight angle (putting some stress on the mechanicals), as soon as you start the car the wheel “clunks” and it moves or hops slightly as well. This usually happens when I am in a hurry, pull into a spot and shut the ignition off before allowing the car to be aimed dead ahead. The when I start it later or next day there is a “clunk” or “thunk” as the power comes back to the steering.

I'm pretty sure my clunk is generating from transmission because my steering is always straight and unlocked. Not sure if it is the latest transmission software update that is causing the issue. Like I said before, I've been driving the car for 2 years and I just have the issue recently after a transmission software update.

Since it is in "Park", I would rule out a driveline problem. It could be motor mounts and the A/C compressor turning on. Take it to the dealer and tell them about the noise. They'll check it out and tell you what's causing it.
