Default Q5e “Locking error in charging system”

Has anyone else had this error? I can hear the charger lock trying to engage/disengage and then I end up with a red indicator light.

I did not see such issue. Cause of the issue might be:
  • mechanical obstacle which prevent lock mechanist to lock the port
  • electric malfunction
I would recommend to try use charge port emergency release procedure (page 128 in Owner's manual). It might help to remove the possible obstacle if it has there.
Another suggestion - try to use any public charging station (if any exists in your area).

Thanks @AT for taking the time to help. I did inspect both the CCS plug and receptacle for dirt or other debris and found none. The public charger down the street gives the same error, but I haven’t tried the emergency release yet.

I did pull the emergency release cable but this didn’t change the situation. We’ll have to bring the car to the dealership tomorrow.

I have been having what looks like the exact same issue since my first day owning my Q5 (55 PHEV Prestige Trim) - purchased on 6/12, only has 651 miles on the odometer.

The issue I've had is with initiating the charging session, not with disconnecting/ending the charging session. The problem has been intermittent, seemingly random, and not specific to the type of charger I'm using. I do not have a home charging setup and have been using public Type 2 chargers (most often Chargepoint). I've had the same charger work on one day, then fail the next.

The charging session fails to start. The locking pin solenoid at the top of the vehicle charging port cycles three (3) times, in an attempt to negotiate the charging session with the charger, then errors out with a solid red light on the vehicle at the charging port. The locking pin is easily visualized (at least using a Chargepoint plug) and there is no mechanical obstruction around the locking pin - it moves freely with full range of motion. In addition to the red error light on the vehicle charging port, the myAudi app shows the errors shown in your initial post "Charging planning could not execute action on Q5: Locking error in charging system", and the MMI shows the errors "There is an error in the wired charging system", and "Charging could not be started due to a system error."

My vehicle has been at the dealership and the problem was (luckily) reproduced after several days - the dealer also experienced the seemingly random success and failure in initiating a charging session and cannot pinpoint the problem to a specific charger or charger type.

After 2+ weeks of back and forth between the dealer and Audi of America Technical Assistance, AoA is recommending a replacement of the Charging Control Unit (dealer's description - not sure if that is the actual part description or what the P/N would be). Part is on order from Germany with an expected arrival of 7/12. I will provide updates when I have more to report, and if that solves my issue.

I'd love to learn more about what you figure out or if others are encountering anything similar - there doesn't seem to be much about this issue on the internet at the moment.

Default A few photos that I neglected to upload with my initial post…

See photos of the myAudi app, MMI and charging port errors and and attached video of the failure to initiate charging with locking pin solenoid cycling.

Wow. This is exactly the same issue that we are having with our car. We also have the prestige trim, and took it to the dealership two days ago where they successfully re-produced the issue. For us it’s not an intermittent problem but happens every time we plug the car in. The dealer said that there was no error code that they could check and so took most of the day to try running some diagnostics before finally ordering some thing that they are calling the “locking unit”. I don’t have an arrival date yet but they expect it to come next week. I’m definitely going to get the part number that they’re replacing as soon as they have that information available, and would love to know the exact part number you end up having replaced in your car.

Here's the video I took of our car having the same issue. One thing I just noticed is that we get a yellow light after the first locking attempt.

Just a small update: today when I plugged in the car it locked and started charging with no error. The past week when we had the issue we were seeing 100F+ days so I’m curious if this issue has anything to do with the air temperature…

In our case, it was also very hot when we first picked up the car and had this problem (high 90's, low 100's). However, we had the issue even when the temps dropped into the 80's. I asked our service rep for the part name and number of what was ordered to try and fix our issue...he said he wasn't sure off the top of his head (sounded like the lead technician ordered the part on a different system?), but that once the part comes in, he'll text the info over to me. I'll share as soon as I have more...
