Frustrated with crank no start
My question is should it do the same (start then die after a few seconds) for the Q7 even though its a diesel? And if hes correct and its not the ECU, where do I go from here?
Honestly, to get any useful help from a forum with a possibly complex issue such as your no-start condition, you always gotta start off with a full description of your vehicle and post your data for most recent VAGCOM scan of the car (full Auto-scan). Diesels are fairly simple engines, but these do require extremely high fuel pressure from HPFP to start/run, working glowplugs (if it's below certain temp threshold) a working fuel pressure (feedback loop) regulator/sensor on the fuel rail, a working in-tank fuel pump to get the fuel to the filter and the HPFP, a fuel filter that's not clogged, no air or water in fuel lines, good system voltage/battery, a good starter motor, etc., etc. And good fuel/ additives never hurts either, especially if your car's been sitting for quite a while w/o running...diesel fuel breaks down relatively quickly if a stabilizer isn't added for storage.

Just to clarify, everything with a wired connection on this car...doesn't matter what it is; a sensor/ECU/Battery, etc., that you've disconnected on your car is generally going to create a trouble code in some control module simply because you disconnected it. In the case of the battery or major components, such as the ECU or other control modules, disconnecting those will create trouble codes for everything that lies beneath their 'umbrella of control'...that they are connected to or monitor, etc. Reconnecting items again does not remove the stored fault/error codes from a control module, which often will have negative impact, as the car still thinks something is wrong. This is pretty huge deal when talking about no-start conditions, as this car's ECU monitors so many data point and feedback loops.
The first thing you do when working on this car is scan it fully to see what the car can tell you about what is wrong, which also gives you a baseline to work from. After working on this car, the first thing you do is clear any fault codes that popped because of what you disconnected/reconnected, etc., so this would be compensating for what errors you created while working on the car.
Once you've cleared all codes post-repairs or services to restore parity, then you do a complete auto-scan to see if anything returns as a hard code (active, intermittent, etc., but not going away), and that's what we mean by give us a 'clean, full auto-scan' to look at.
There's also some great VCDS videos online for how to use most effectively, as well as focused on use of both basic and more advanced diagnostic functions. You don't have to figure it out...there's lots of VCDS support / educational how-to info on the internet, and I've watched several of these to expand my personal understanding of how to use it more effectively.
