Rocker Arm replacement , is it worth it ? Need advice
2020 B9.5 , 125,000 KM on it
Manufactured 01/2020 with updated pistons
Had the engine bore-scoped - no piston slap issues, engine is clean
Just got brakes done all around
Just had Audi 120K major service
No other issues with the car
Car developed ticking/misfire Cylinder 1 only when engine is cold, according to Audi TSB's these are typical symptoms of failing rocker arm bearings.
My indy Audi mechanic agrees this is 95% the cause of the ticking and misfires as per Audi TSB and my symptoms
Repair Estimate is $5-7K CAD ($4K USD)
Car wholesale value is around $24K CAD ($20K USD)
The big question is: is it worth dumping so much money into this repair ? Everything else is flawless and I just spent $3K on brakes/major service.
As someone who has lived with the rocker arm fear for the 8 years I’ve owned my S5 (which I still love) I’ve often pondered that same dilemma. I have the extended warranty for another two years though I know that warranty coverage decrease as the cars age increases and there does not sound like anything is amiss under the hood. Still, I wonder …

Basically, tomorrow the cars trade value will be the same whether you fix the issue or not. The wholesale buyer (dealer, Carmax, auction ect) isn't going to care enough about the ticking noise to impact the trade value.
